so this w/e i changed my oil and this morning the "service engine soon" light came on. the oil level is fine and can find no other visible indications of why this would happen. anybody know which scan tool i could use to diagnose this problem on my 98 frontier? any help greatly appreciated by me and the truck.
Take your truck to Jiffy Lube and tell them that you want them to check the code out. Most of the time they will do it for free and tell you why the light came on and shut it off. (At least they do it free around here).

I am assuming this is a 2.4L if so. I have 97 truck, my diagnostics are as follows. remove passenger seat, under the seat you will find the ecu(electronic control unit) on the side of the unit is a small screw, turn on ign,
turn screw counterclockwise, wait for light to flash twice, then turn clockwise, watch check engine light and count long and short flashes, Also I hear that autozone may check fault codes for you.
I took my truck to the dealer and had them do a complemtry 100pt check. they found normal wear and tear stuff. My truck is a 2001 Frontier Crew Cab XE model with power everything and such it has 51000 miles on it. I changed the fuel filter, changed the spark plugs, changed the PCV valve, and changed the oil. Now there were no problems before or after doing all of this. I cleaned up and closed up then backed my truck up off of some stands and then the service engine light came on. I think it is a conspiracy and to coinsadental that I went to the dealer that same day. I tried to reset it by taking the negative lead off of the battery and letting is sit for about five minuets then reattached it. Still did not reset the main computer for the light. If any one else can help me out that would be great. Short of taking it to AutoZone and having the ECU code read. Side note, I tried leaving the negative terminal on the battery off for five to ten min. and that did not work. Also trying the leave it off over night thing to see if that works for some odd reason. Will post if it does.

Well, thanks for the input. I shall give it a try. The leaving it unhooked over night thing did not work. I shall try this and report back again for other Frontier owners. My next task will be to have the code read at Auto Zone.
Well I did just that and it did not work either. This morning though it was still there and after dropping my son off at school, i came back out to my truck to leave and after starting it up I noticed that the light had turned off.
Conclusion, the error went away on it's own because it was not seen again. I think that when the fuse blew it sent a error code to the OBD II. The error I will find out later and confirm.
