Question Unlisted ECU codes

Happy Saturday you buncha Nissan Nuts!
Pulled the bench seat on my 97 2WD HB to check ECU codes and discovered a couple things. First, I am not as clean as I thought I am , second, my check engine light flashes number codes that do not seem to be listed anywhere that I can find. Hopefully one of you folks will be able to interpret them for me. The first code is 75 and the second is 93. I let it cycle through several times to be sure I got them right. I counted 7 slow blinks and 5 quick flashes, followed by 9 slow blinks and 3 quick flashes.

Those are listed codes but the list you are probably looking at is the list if you are using a code reader, the numbers are different if you flash them on the dash. The 0705 and 0903 codes are actually P0440 and P0446.

0705 - EVAP system leak
0903 - EVAP canister vent control valve circuit fault

Thanks! It's raining hard here, so I'll take the chance to read about the evap system then get out and inspect it.
Regards,

P0440 and P0446.

0705 - EVAP system leak
0903 - EVAP canister vent control valve circuit fault.
The EVAP canister vent control valve is going bad on all these vehicles and is mounted to the EVAP canister. The mounting screws almost always rust into the canister and when you try to remove the valve, the screws strip into the canister.
90% of the time you need to replace both. $$$$$
big time dealer item.
There are tech bulletins and Nissan knows about this and doesn't care. I have never had emmission parts go bad so early into the vehicles life.

Complaint to Nissan these parts are expensive.
If you pay diagnostics and labor you could be spending big $$$ for a Nissan defect.

When I went out and popped the hood, I looked down and to the right firewall. This is the spot years and years of experience has taught me I can expect to find the coffee can sized EVAP cannister. However, all I have there is a big empty space! Near as I can tell, the EVAP cannister is to the rear of, and under the breather/throttle body. Is this correct? Since I really don't want to damage my MAP sensor (which, unlike the EVAP cannister, WILL affect engine performance) I have left this particular problem to be dealt with at some future time.

The EVAP valve and canister is located up under the rear driver side behind the rear tire mounted up to a metal bracket . Drivers side rear fender well. valve has a vacuum hose and electrical connector on it, physically mounted with 2 screws into the plastic
canister. Good luck. these 2 pieces are sealed units.

I believe the problem is a defective vent valve that leaks. I check the electronic valve action and mine worked fine. But sprayed some cleaner into it and it leaked. Then the screws
were rusted into the canister. I had to replace both. Nissan should pay for these parts, its a manufacturer defect. I was told by the dealer these parts were back ordered and just released about 2.5 weeks ago. The kicker they use your vin number to look up the correct part for your vehicle. there are 2 nissan tech bulletins referencing the vent valve and canister.
( tb060 and tb085 alldata)

I thought these products were quality and Nissan stood behind problem issues, but they ignore all issues.

Wow, boy was I looking at the wrong end of the horse! Thanks for steering me in the right direction. I have a Haynes manual that covers my truck (in theory) but I have found it to be the worst Haynes I have ever used. I am very dissapointed with it. As for the cannister, it sounds like it should have been mounted under the hood after all to protect it from the elements better.

If you need factory parts, at least get the best price you can... I buy all of mine from Joe at Infiniti of Scottsdale (they sell Nissan parts too) at 1-888-216-5328. You'll get at least 25% off of list, and I find more like 50% off the quotes I get from my local dealership - they have a weird pricing matrix, and nothing is ever in stock!

He's very familiar with the HB trucks since he drives a 96 5sp.

Good luck!

Heath

This may sound completely unrelated but make sure you check all your air hoses in the engine compartment for leaks. The canister on my Pathfinder is behind the rear wheel as well but I got both of those errors when I cleaned my throttle plate and replaced my PCV valve, both nowhere near the EVAP canister. I've since tightened some of the connections and haven't gotten the errors again.

This weekend I reset the ECU before driving to West Virginia. I drove 387 miles out, drove around town all weekend, hauled brick, blah blah blah. Then, on the return trip to DC, about 100 yards from home, my check engine light came on again! Now this is a duplicate of the last time the light came on. Right down to the location. Of course, the weather was different, but I am now wondering if the EVAP fault is being caused by driving from high altitude to sea level in a matter of a few hours or so. Has anybody else experienced this?
