Your thoughts on 95 Pathfinder XE....

Hey guys,
I am thinking of purchasing an auto White 1995 4x4 Pathfinder. The owner wants $6000 CDN for it.....The only things that are really worrysome are the mileage and the gas mileage. Being the owner of a 1993 Acura Legend, I am confident in the reliability of import vehicles., but not yet sold on nissans yet (never owned one). MY Dad had an 89 Pathfinder and it was gutless pig, which was later sold.

Anyways, it has 320 000km on it, and they are mostly highway. A little bit of rust around the bottom of the door. Interior and engine are mint (clean). It was also maintanied as a fleet vehicle.

What are your experiences with high kms on these vehicles? Are the trannies generally strong? Any problems with lifter noise, oil leaks, or buring oil at higher kms? Also, is it like a typical import where the timing belt, etc has to be replaced every 100Kms?

Also, is there any problems that generally plague the vehicle with regards to the drivetrain, suspension, and 4x4 system.

Also, if you have a FAQ page, please point me to it.

Thanks for your suggestions.....

-Cole

I bought a '95 XE 4x4 King Cab last November. It has almost 175k miles on it, which is about 277k kilos if my math is correct. If the engine is a V-6 then yes, the timing BELT has to be replaced in intervals. I think the spec is 60,000 miles (100 kms is close enough). If it's the 4-cylinder, it has a timing CHAIN, and never has to be replaced due to wear. The guides, however, commonly get "worn" and begin to fail on these engines if not lubricated properly.

Mine is a 5-speed, so I don't know about the automatic's reliability. My 5-speed transmission (and transfer case) both seem to run and drive like new. I think even the clutch is original on it.

I would be concerned about buying anything with 199,000 miles on it. You are aproaching if not exceeding the mechanical limits of the vehicle. My old man drove a Nissan PU for 460+ but it was never relied upon and serviced frequently. Cab mounts wore through, Brake/Fuel lines rusted away, door would no longer hold a window regulator, and other assorted maladies due to the excessive age/wear placed on it. He gave the truck away and there is some kid in WV who is very proud of it at this very moment. Fleet vehicles accrue excessive wear due to being driven by more than one person. I do not know why htis is true, but it is. So unless 6K CDN = $1 American, pass on this one. IMHO Aaron Ford
