Surge when letting off throttle

Hello out there. I was hoping one of you may have run into this before. I have a '93 Truck with the KA24E. I have 122k miles. I have had absoultely NO problemswith this truck at all. Recently, the truck began to surge when letting off the throttle. It is most noticeable when at low speed, such as 2nd gear. It surges like I am putting my foot on the throttle and tapping it at idle speed. I have cleaned all the linkage at the throttle body and noticed no kind of binding. If the truck had a carb, I would swear the float was sticking. If anyone has any advice, I would be very greatful. Thanks. LL

I do not believe you are alone in the problem as I have expirenced it myself, like you especailly in lower gears. At first I thought it was just my imagination but when my friend pointed it out to me as well, I knew something was up. Due to the "surge" I had suspected that it was perhaps a fuel delievery problem giving it a little too much gas in spurts when obviously it shouldn't be. However I haven't had any chance to check any of it out. Was this a recent development though? I have a '95 with the K and it only has 69k miles under her hood. Any one have any ideas?

Thanks,
Steve

Gee, y'all got me stumped on this one. My snowmobiles do this when I have them jetted too rich. If I had to guess I would suspect the air filter or some airway obstruction. Try a new air filter. Try disconnecting the air intake silencer crossover tube (this might solve it if it's a birds nest). A vacuum leak could also cause this.... Fuel puddling in the manifold would cause this (dirty injectors). Maybe a new set of plugs? Just brainstorming at this point. Let us know if you find it. Aaron

Now that you mention the vaccum leak, that just might be it. Sometimes when I crank her up she'll let off a high pitched squeal, however when i shut it down and re-crank, it goes away. I was thinking maybe a noisy belt or a vaccum hose. I think I shall go and see what I can dig up...

I'm gonna start with the fuel filter. It's been a year since I changed it. Then run some injector cleaner through it. My air filter (k&n) looks good. I'm gonna tear it all apart. I'll let you guys know what I find. Thanks for the advice. LL

I had simular(spelling) situation with mine and it turned out to be the clutch slipping. The KA24E fuel shuts off under decelleration, it also maybe your timing chain and guides are worn causing time timing too be irractic.

It sounds like you may have hit the nail on the head. I found my timing chain is very loose. I'm sure the tensioner is just about history. Looks like I have a bigger weekend project to work on. I'll get it changed out and let you guys know how it turns out. Thanks for the great advice. LL

I tore into my engine over the weekend and guess what I found. The timing chain tensioner was broken in half. The remnants of it were in the bottom of the oil pan. It's a miracle the pieces of plastic didn't get into the engine and destroy it. Looks like the chain was so loose it's off a few teeth on the timing. Oddly enough, it was not running rough. I'll finish it tomorrow, tearing all the parts and pieces off was a chore. Has anyone else found that when they replaced their timing chain that the silver links and the marks on the sprockets were off a little? Any more advice would be appreciated. It's great to have fourms like this one to help everyone and share knowledge. Thanks so much for the advice to check the timing chain. Looks like my ol work truck will be on the road for another 125k miles.
