1997 pathfinder check engine light

I have a 1997 pathfinder and the engine check light has come on.
I runs fine, and the light has been on for about 6 days.
I would like to know where I can get to the ecm to check the obd codes, fix the problem and clear the codes. Do I need to remove the dash plate under the steering for access. How many clean warm starts to clear the codes normally. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

See the message from the moderator(top of forum), it has all pertinent info on codeshooting Aaron

Oh yeah, mine is on, too. I need to shoot it but I simply don't have the time.

Just keep in mind that your ECU may not have the LED mentioned in the moderator's message - but your dash light will flash the code.

On my 1997 Pathfinder XE you can check the ECU while it's mounted under the dash, it takes a little while to find the right screw and remove the tape covering it but once you've got it you can easily check codes and clear them in the future without taking anything apart.

Two tricky points are the tape that covers the screw, I used the point of a screw to scrape the tape away. The other is that there are two phillips screw heads on either side of the diagnostic screw so you need to make sure you have the right one, the diagnostic screw is bigger and is a straight screw instead of phillips. I used a small inspection mirror to view the screw on top of the ECU before trying to get at it with a small screwdriver. Also the screwdriver was the kind you attach to a keychain, about 1" around with 4 straight heads off each side. Whatever you use make sure it's short since there's not a lot of room above the ECU.

Once you get it once it's very easy to reach up there and turn the screw to put it in diagnostic mode. And the check engine light on the dash will flash out the codes so you don't need to worry about an LED on the ECU.
