Quick storyline - Had the transmission fluid changed back in Sept. 2007. Last week the service engine light came on so I took my Murano to the dealer. Dealer said the mechanic (Not a Nissan Dealer) use ATF instead of the required CVT fluid. Took my Murano back to the mechanic and he said he would take care of it. He flushed the trans fluid and refilled it with the correct CVT fluid. Nissan Dealer said the mechanic would want to do this but the seals would be "burnt" and the transmission should be completely replaced. When I asked my mechanic about it he said that the ATF contains a "lubeguard" that protects the seals from any damage. Now, being ignornant as to vehicle repair (I can top-off fluids and change a battery at most) I was just wondering if there are any mechanics or car buffs who know is the Dealer right? or is my mechanic right? Should I be looking to trade this car in and get a new one? Please help.

If you have an owners manual, read it! It clearly says to use "Nissan Genuine CVT Trans Fluid" Anything else will damage the CVT trans! Sounds like you'll be needing a new trans!
