2000 Nissan Xterra rough idle with cold engine
Hello nissan gurus,
I have a 2000 xterra v6 with 97000 km. I bought it used a few months ago and it appears to have one problem. When I first start the engine it has an extremely rough idle. Lately this idle problem is so extreme the engine has stall a few times. The engine also runs very rough when driving and often looses power and random intervals. It does all this for 15-20 minutes until the engine reaches running temperature (middle of the gauge). After which it runs great.
I had the vehicle inspected prior to purchasing it and the plugs, wires, distributor cap all checked out. It does not appear to be a plug or wire issue. I have also run through 2 courses of injector cleaner and put in quality fuel, no change.
The engine warning light is NOT on.
The research I have done seems to mention the knock sensor a couple of times, although that seems to include an engine warning light being on. Current theories include temperature sensor problem, air mass meter on intake problem or something like that. I am currently looking at the service manual and trying to determine which temperature sensor could cause a problem like this (with limited knowledge). There is engine coolant (no cooling problems), air temperature (wouldn't that remain constant?), fuel temp (?), and EGR temperature sensor (possibly?, this changes as the engine warms?)
I would greatly appreciate any input on this.
Thanks,
John
