Cold weather starting issue 1995 XE

Hello,

I have a XE Pickup _V6 motor . In really cold weather <20 degrees I'll turn the key and have all lights and radio come on, but starter will not engage. After several minutes of turning the ignition key, I'll here a slight buzzing sound (lower passenger side) like a relay energizing and the motor starts no problem. In warmer weather I never get this. Is it a starter issue or a relay issue? Thanks for the input

Sounds more like a battery issue to me.

I have the same exact problem. The relay that is buzzing is the second from the front in that bank of relays on the inner passenger fender on my truck. It is not a battery problem in my truck, but I haven't figured it out yet. If I just hold the key in the start position for about 2 - 5 seconds (depending on the temp) I will get that buzzing in the relay and it will start. Had someone tell me that it might be the clutch interlock switch at the clutch pedal, but I haven't had time to test that yet. Let me know if you have any luck. I have a '95 v6 also with a standard trans.

Thanks for the response, at least I know now where the relay is. I was always by myself when it happened, couldn't check. I thought of the clutch switch, but it works fine in slightly warmer temps. I have some relays lying around I'll get to it next week sometime(work weekends). I'll let you know for sure.

I have replaced the relay and bypassed the clutch switch and neither one is the culprit. I think my next move will be to check the ignition switch. I will let you know.

Just a follow up on this starting issue. This morning I replaced the electrical part of the ignition switch and the problem is gone. The electrical part is easy to replace, just remove the column cover (6-8 screws), one screw on the back of the ignition and the electrical connector. Go to the junkyard and get one there, it's cheaper and you can practice so you don't break your stuff. Hope this helps.
