Just replaced a completly shot, free floating centre bearing, ie. the rubber was completly torn, and replaced all of the U joints and now I have a vibration that goes through all driving speeds. Mechanic drove it with the rear shaft out and still got the vibration. There was no vibration with the old parts. Any suggestions?
When you say he drove it with the shaft out was the entire shaft out or just the section from the carrier bearing to the differential? I would guess that either the shaft was put back together wrong and it's out of balence or the new carrier bearing has issues.
Hi Oldnissanguy. He had the short front shaft in to keep the tranny fluid from leaking. His thought was that the little shaft would not be out of balance. I aked if they marked the positions of the shaft before removal and they said yes, although I had them rotate the rear 180 degrees and it is slightly better now. It might just be seating in or we are getting used to it.
Okay, but you shouldn't have to get used to it. It sounds like your problem is with the front half of the shaft or the new carrier bearing. Did you notice anything that would indicate that the bearing might have been damaged during the install? Can you see any place where a balance lug might have been knocked off the front shaft?
