Noise from suspension

I'm having trouble tracking down a noise on my 89' D21 2WD. When I make a turn or go around a bend or curve I get a thunk from the rear end of the truck. I replaced all four shocks since they were worn beyond belief. The ride was improved but I still had this noise from the rear end. I looked under the truck and could see anything wrong. I rocked the truck from side to side while parked and I couldn't hear or see anything. I'm thinking I have a broken spring? I couldn't really see or tell if one was broken and the left/right sides are level in height. I'm thinking that I have a possibly broken transmission mount. What should I look for and what could be the other possible problems?

Maybe the spare is loose and shifts around under enough pressure, which would be more than you can generate by pushing on the truck.

I'm going to take the spare off and drive it around the block to see if the noise goes away. Thanks for the tip though.

I have the same noise as decribed. I thought my noise was my exhaust system because the bracket half down is broken off and it was banging around. I also replaced the bolts to the box in the rear which were really loose. My spare tire is tight athough the chain is hanging down. Still I get the clunk. Let us know what solves your clunk so I can try it.

My 95' does the same thing but it hardly ever does it and it's not that noticeable. You have to be really listening hard to hear anything. On the 89' I can hear it all the time. I'm thinking that it might be a bad motor or transmission mount. We'll have to see.
