I have a 97 2wd p-up with 148K miles on the KA24E and my startup rattle finally got sooo bad sometimes it almost sounded like a diesel. Well I finally got sick of listening to it and refused to pay someone $800-$1200 to fix it so I finally swapped it all out this past weekend after having the parts to do it for over a year. (New Nissan timing chain, guides, tensioner crank and cam sprockets, and waterpump) I was surprised after pulling the valve cover that my p-up already had the good steel backed guides in it. After getting the timing cover off I found they were for sure the new type guides and were really ok but the timing chain was pretty worn out and very loose. The tensioner seemed to be working fine. Anyway I got it all back together after working on it a total of about 2 days at leisure pace including having to make a cam gear tool to hold it to torque the bolt (Instead of putting all that pressure on the chain) and now the timing chain rattle has been put to rest. Its as quiet as a mouse starting up now no rattle at all.
It also feels like it has a bit more low end power too maybe from the cam being slightly retarded before with the old chain?
I bought the truck from the original owner with 21K miles and they never mentioned having the timing chain guides replaced. It always had a little rattle in it even then. I wonder if Nissan did put some of the good guides in some of the KA24s? My built date is 07/97.
Anyway here is a link below to help anyone out if you want to do it yourself.(You don't have to take the A/c compresser off as it states, It was for a car so prt number may not be right for truck either ) Its not too difficult a job. I used the service manual for most of it.
Timing Chain Rattle to Rest Link
Hmmm...Now to replace that noisy throw out bearing.......
