i recently got a this truck with 121k on it. changed the oil and but 10w30 castrol in it. ran a can of seafoam thru it and but a new air filter on it too. it still idles rough tho. after the engine is warmed up it will idle fine for about 2 min then it idles down and sounds rough but u can then gas it and it idles right for about another 2 mins.
check for a vacuum leak, and possibly the TPS and IAC. do you happen to know when the last time a tune up was done? (plugs, wires, filters: air and fuel, cap and rotor) have you checked for any codes? you could also check the carb to see if it there is any sludge in the throat.
Anytime I buy an old vehicle, the first thing I do is a complete tune up with OEM parts. Plugs, distributor cap, rotor , air filter, plug wires, PCV valve, and flush and replace antifreeze. If it runs hot at all I replace the thermostat.
If you are standing in front of the truck looking at the engine, the PVC valve is located on the lower right side of the throttle body or maybe into the intake just below the thottle body . It has a rubber elbow shaped hose attached to it that curve dwon. It can be a booger to get off sometimes. The valve screws in. You will have to take some of the vacuum hoses off to get the air filter off. It would be a good time to replace the vacuum lines. Be careful to mark them and replace onto the correct fittings. Your idling problem may be caused by a bad or incorrectly installed hose. Unfortuantely, nobody has come up witha good drawing of how the hoses are routed on a D-21 pickup.
THE SENOR LIGHT ON MY TRUCH WAS ON WHEN I GOT AND THE BATTERY LIGHT WAS ON TOO, THAT BATT LIGHT WOULD GET REAL DIM WHEN NO GAS IS APLIED BUT IF I REV IT UP IT GETS BRIGHTER AS WELL
KNOW MY TRUCK WILL NOT IDLE
IT'LL RUN ONLY IF YOU PRESS THE GAS PEDAL. IF I PRESS THE CLUTCH TO STOP IT WILL DIES IN ABOUT 3 SEC. THE TRUCK DOESNT EVEN ACT LIGHT IT WANTS TO IDLE. LIKE IT REVS DOWN JUST AND DIES AS FAST AS IT REVS.
IT DIDNT DO THIS TILL WE RAN THE TRUCK ABOUT OUT OF GAS.
