On my 1995 Harbody 5 speed I've recently had trouble getting into first gear. Usually it takes a few tries before it will go into 1st and even then it sounds and feels rough. It shifts fine in all the other gears and the clutch is strong. Today, I crawled under and looked for leaks and I noticed a large amount of oil seeping from the transmission. I'm going to check the fluid level tomorrow. What are the possible problems besides a low fluid level?

Most likely your clutch has worn and is dragging.

Adjust clutch pedal so it has approximatly 1" freeplay when cold.

alot of trannys to make it easier to go into 1st but dropping it in 2nd (this is to align the synchros) then go into 1st, if that doesnt work your probably looking at worn 1st gear synchros, if it was the clutch you would have troubles in all gears.

A low fluid level doesn't help either...refill with GL-4 gear oil ONLY, do not use GL-5, it will eat up the brass and really ruin the trans after a while.

I always though there was no syncs on first and reverse. Because syncs are made to align one gear to another (hence nothing before first gear or reverse). I would say it is the clutch, syncs help the transition after first.
