I recently replaced my timing chain, sprockets and guides due to the plastic guide breaking, and now I cant get my timing right.
When I use the timing light the marks are way off to the right, by moving the distributor all the way clockwise I can get it to where I can drive down the road but the timing marks are not lined up. The marks on the pulley are -5..0..5..10..15..20 but by rotating it CW fully it stops on like -10( i think as there are no marks).
I double and triple checked to make sure the silver links were lined up with the marks on the sprockets.
The only thing I can think of after doing an exhaustive search and read marathon on this and other forums is that the oil pump is off by a gear tooth.
I dont know though as there was no difinitive thread about it. Even tried to talk to a nissan service dept tech but they are too busy to even give me the timing degrees or idle speed(lost my emissions panel).

Any help would be appreciated.
Lastly this has got to be the best banana smilie!
Pull the Oil Pump and Dist, reinsert the Oil Pump, make sure the mark on the shaft and the mark on the pump are in line with each other. Do this carefully, straight in so the gear does'nt move.
Make a mark on the metal lip of the Dist right below where number 1 plug wire goes, make sure rotor is turned to this spot.
Hold Rotor and Dist and try to insert, if it will go in and still be on the mark it's ok.
If it wont go in at this point the Oil Pump is off a tooth, sometime's it takes a few trys to get the Oil Pump in right.
Well I just drove it down the road and back with the timing at about -8 degrees and the distributor turned all the way clockwise.
The only problems I felt was a slight hesitation/stumble when pressing on the accelerator. Got it up to 3rd gear and about 35 mph, didnt want to go much higher as its not insured or registered, also didnt want to go to far so I just took it for a little spin.
Im going to try to take out the oil pump in a bit and see if i put it in right and if so then maybe install it so its one gear tooth back, im thinking that will allow me to get my timing on the marks at least.

Sweet its what i was thinking. I have to let it cool down a bit after my joyride so Ill let you know later how it worked out

Couldn't you just pull the distributor and turn it one tooth and put it back in? Sounds like it's one tooth off somewhere to me.

no the both the distributor and oil pump have like half moon tongue and grooves that fit together only one way and the oil pump is the only one with gears that connect to the crankshaft.
I wish it did though as it would be way easier.
WOOOOOOT!!!! The oil pump was off azhardbody, adjusted it and now shes runnin smooth, although it was at 10 degrees and 1250 rpm at idle, i dropped it down to 1050-1100 rpm, sounds good but still dont know the stock specs for the timing and idle so oh well..

going for a test drive to see how she feels

Factory calls for 10 BTDC, I've been running 12, that seems to be about optimum.
Thx, went to firestone and they told me the same thing, 10 degrees at 750-850 rpm, i tried setting it to 750 but it doesnt sound right that low so I put it at 900, close enough for me. I also put a belt on my AC which I havent used in like 7 years, and unbelievably it works just fine, nice and cold which helps in 100 degree heat.
now to just get insurance and registration and im set.
no more sweating to death in traffic on my motorcycle.
