My 96 Hardbody 4 banger just turned 80k original miles and I have noticed a significant decrease in fuel economy and power. I decided to do a little tune up as I have not done one since I bought the truck. Here is what I did:
Replaced plugs
Replaced plug wires
Replaced Rotor
Replaced rotor cap
Replaced Air cleaner
Replaced PCV valve(what a pain)
I have notived a nice increase in power on the low end, and she idle much smoother than before. BUT about two hours after I finished I noticed the Check Engine Light was on. I disconnected the battery for about an hour to try and reset it(don't think this really works) and it did stay of until about 15 minutes into my next trip.
So I know that changing those parts can have an effect on exhaust gas makup and temperature, but I have no idea if this is a real problem or not.
Has anyone had a similar experience? And just how do I reset the ECU on the 96 HB anyhow? Thanks ahead of time for any help you can provide.
its OBD II, take the truck to Autozone and have them scan for codes, it will pull a history as well, then we can go from there, 1st did you get everything reconnected that you pulled off?
I did get everything back on. But I was reading that when taking off the air cleaner assembly it is easy to damage the mass air flow sensor, I will check that as well. Do you know what autozone charges to scan for codes?
2nd favorite word that begins with "f" .... free, also check the vacuum hoses on the bottom of the air cleaner, they tend to get ripped/torn at times when taking off the air cleaner due to aging.
