Question about compatibility of ECM's for various years of D21 Hardbody's

I have an 86.5 4x4 w/ the Z24 in it. My wife took my truck to work yesterday. She left the lights on and drained the battery, no big deal right. Well her and another female tried to jump start the truck and in the process she reversed the polarity on the Truck's battery causing the ECM to start smoking. I took the cover off of the computer and the circuit board looks fine, no burns (on the top at least) and the wire harness' that plug into it look fine. My question is if she did fry the ECM do I have to find one specifically for an 86.5 or say will an '89 or even '90 and so on work just the same? LESSON HERE, DON'T LET YOUR GIRLFRIEND OR WIFE EVER DRIVE YOUR TRUCK!

Thanks,

Jeff

if there's smoke... something went. ECM's don't use Camels.

You did'nt mention, but did you get the truck started? I cant believe there isn't a 100amp fuse to protect the electrical system.

No I never did get the truck started. Upon further inspection I found the cause of the smoke. Next to the on/off switch on the ECM there are 2 transistors and one of them was almost melted. I found a corresponding replacement at a local electronics shop and soldered that in, hooked the ECM back up and tried jumping the battery again (properly hooked up!) and the other transistor started smoking. Needless to say it's now in the shop. The wrench has said that the rest of the electrical system looks fine but the computer is shot (go figure). Hopefully this nightmare will be all over soon
