AM reception in '05 XTerra horrible, am I missing something?

I'm a big talk radio geek, and the AM reception in my '05 Xterra is horrible. I waited until I got the stereo changed out with a new one to see if the stereo itself might be the case, but it's still horrible even after putting in a new CD head (which I was planning on doing anyway). Is there something I can do to boost my AM reception? Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

check the antenna, make sure the center is not grounded to the truck.
