The truck ran fine yesterday, started it up at about noon today and noticed a knocking/ticking that followed the rpm's. It's a 95' Nissan XE shortbed 4x4 4cly. Here is a short clip of the problem. Any help is much appreciated.
I don't think it stuck. They just seem to run dry or should I say lubed but not enough. I have the same engine that you have. When I first got the truck the noise would happen frequently. I would add the STP and it would go away. I haven't head it in a couple of years maybe since changing to synthetic oil. The truck has 270,000 miles on it now, so I guess it worked.

these trucks have hydraulic lash adjusters, they will stick sometimes and are realy bad with poor maintenance. simply adding a little ATF will cut this sludge and varnish rather quickly. I use it a few hundred miles before each oil change.

spat: i've heard others mention this before. How much ATF do you use?
i'm running AMSoil now but switching to mobile 1 in april because i got 12 quarts for $2.57 after rebates. want to clean the crankcase before i change oil types
Hello there, I have a 1995 Pathy with the same hydraulic lash adjusters, when i bought the vehicle about 5000 miles ago, it was barely ticking in the mornings...I knew about the check valve oil filters, and from what i knew, most of the Nissans around 94-95 would do this for years without any major problems, just annoying as crap.. Well, i have noticed that they are ticking louder and getting worse. These valves are not adjustabe are they? Will the trans fluid really help? What kind would you recommend for me? I am currently running Penz, 5w30.
Also, i attend a local technical school with one of the smartest men i have ever come in contact with. He's a million times over ASE certified mechanic. Gary Mullins. I questioned him about my problem, he gave me all the info on the adjusters and alittle more as well. I was running Penz 10w30, he immediatley told me to try 5w30, because the holes in my engine that lube the valves may be too thin for that thick of oil. He's correct(as i should have known) So for all you guys out there with Pathy's..Use what vescosity oil is recommended. Save you from some very annoying problems and extend your engine life. Is there any way to clean these from removing the valve covers, or is this just natural wear at around 100,000 miles.? ThanX.!

Search for Auto-Rx, LC20, and FP60. These products all have their own web sites and internet sales. I am not affiliated with them other than as a very satisfied user. I have used them all as instructed on my 92 D21 (180k) with the usual engine noises and now the noises are 95% gone. Particularly Auto-RX which also probably saved the auto transmissions. Also great results on a 96 D21 (120k)and a 96 B14 (185k). ATF as an engine cleaner/decarb is generally not recommended anymore even on older engines. May not hurt but there are so much better products available now. Anyway, my $.02.
You can use a quart of ATF for a full 3,000 miles for some really good cleaning. That's what I do, about once a year.
1 quart regular ATF, 3 quarts oil. It won't hurt it.
But, keep an eye on it. If it turns VERY black before your 3,000 mark, go ahead and change it.
Hello there, i was just wondering if The Tranny fluid could harm my engine in any way? I actually think it will work, but just in case....Cuz, i'm 16, and don't have another vehicle...It's my only ride to school....Is there any other way to like manuallly clean these from removing the valve covers..??.Thanx a million.!!

No, it won't hurt it. As long as you do 1 quart of ATF and the rest oil, you'll be fine, and it works very well. It's not necessary to do it EVERY oil change, just once. If you maintain it at an honest 3,000 interval, you only really need to do it once a year.
But to answer your question - no, it will not hurt it.
Besides, that's an old trick from the 60s... my dad did it when he was a kid.

cool Yontrop. I've heard everything from 2 teaspoons in the gas tank/crank to your 1qt. i would just dump some ATF in with dino oil for about 1500mi before i change to the mobile 1.
