Question 95' pickup vehicle speed sensor?

I have a 95' xe and the speedo quite working on me. The check engine light came on (I haven't had it diagnosed yet) and I suspect a bad vehicle speed sensor. The instrument cluster is needle type, not digital and I have read that the vss is behind the speedo in the cluster. After removing this all I saw was a circuit board and wiring harness and light bulbs. So my question is, where is the vss.

By the way, all of the other instruments work (tach, temp, fuel), the speed and odometer are the only things that quit.

thanks

the sensor should be on the tranny tailshaft housing

I have a similar problem, my speedo intermintently works. There doesnt seem to be any pattern, it just quits working for a bit, then comes back. A hard smack to the dash will sometimes bring it back to life. The odometer also stops working when the speedo stops. The tach, fuel, and temp all work fine. Anyone have a recommendation?

Thanks

with the 90's and newer vehicles that experience no speedometer operation along with the VSS code it is most likely a bad speed sensore in the tranny. If you do not have a code then it is more likely the speedometer that has failed or failing if intermitent operation and no code.
