automatic hubs not working

I have done a search on this forum and did not find a relivent answer. I have a 93 nissan D21 pickup v6. The hubs are not locking. I have jacked up the truck and the axles are moving. I have taken them apart down to the barebones and greased them. There were no metal shavings or sign of wear. This did not work. I noticed two brass rings when the hub is removed. I am guessing but it appears that this is what ingages the hubs. Could they be worn out and if so could they be replaced. I hate to pay $100 to $200 for manual hubs when I could have replaced a simple part.

the two rings you refer to, does one fit inside the other? if so those are the "brakes" you are holding, and yes, the will eventually wear out and need replacement. I rebuilt both my hubs in August, if memory serves, a pair of brakes to do one side was like, $25. Might want to consider replacing a couple of the other pieces in there too, washers, and springs, those do wear also, the spring will weaken. Think those were like a dollar or two apiece. the '96MY hubs on my truck are slightly different than those on your 93, but prices shouldnt be all that different. I get all my dealer parts from Courtesy Nissan in Texas, even with shipping costs they usually can do a better price than my local dealership and the guys at Courtesy actually know what they are talking about and are very, very helpful.

Thanks for the fast reply. Yes, I believe we are talking about the same part. Your information is very helpful. I hate to buy new hubs if it is only a $25 part that I need. Thanks.

I failed to mention that they are automatic hubs, so I hope we are talking about the same thing.

I found the problem. When I purchased the truck, I replaced both front cv joints. I just tested it about 2 weeks ago and found that I had no four wheel drive. I took one of the hubs apart again last night and there was no way they were bad. I took the part that goes on the splines on the cv joint to find that the one cv joint was too small, the splines didnt mesh up. Here Advanced Auto gave me the wrong damn cv joint. Go figure. Thanks for your help.
