Gear oil

What are people using for Gear Oil? I am replacing mine and I wondered about using Mobil 1 synthetic and using Redline Shockproof original.

Any suggestions on a good oil for the transfer/ diff and tranny?

Thanks for help

An Amsoil rep recommended to me ATF in the auto trans and transfer case, and the series 2000 75W-90 for the diffs. I may go with Mobil 1 just because you can find it at a lot more stores. I have Redline MT-90 in the manual trans in my Maxima and really like it. Make sure you us the GL-4 oil in the manual trans if you have one. You can get Redline through summitracing.com

Mobil1 GL5 gear oil is excellent for the front/rearends. Most other synthetic gear oils with a GL5 '75 or 80'/W90 weights are excellent. If using Redline shockproof, use heavyweight.

ATF/GL4 is needed for the Xcase. Redline MTL, Neo MTF, Royal Purple Synchromax, or any synthetic ATF are excellent choices.

The manual transmission needs a GL4 compatible manual tranny oil. The Redline MT90 and RoyalPurple Maxgear, along with others that specifically state safe for use in trannies requiring GL4, should be used.

Read the owners manual.
5-6 quarts depending on what drains out.

Gear oils

On my 2001 Frontier 2wd/4cyl/5spd I use Redline MT 90 GL 4 in the tranny. Make sure you use GL4 and NOT GL5 spec.,as GL5 is corrosive to the yellow metals(syncros and brass bushings). Some parts stores tried to tell me they were interchangeable but they are not. In the rear axle I use RedLine 75w90 GL5. I only have a little over 17k miles on it so far, but I know guys that have used Red Line oils and have 200k+ on their vehicles with no failures. Their website link is:

I have used amsoil in the past and have been happy with the cold weather results. However, if there was a Redline dealer nearby I would have probably went with that for I hear it is a little cheaper (who counting pennys but me). whatever you use, use the proper coded lubricant for the vehicle.

I have an amsoil dealer near me, Do they have the GL-4 oils? I cannot find any GL-4 gear oil anywhere in any store even regular issue stuff, whts up with this? I drained the rear end and the stuff was thick!!!!! The mobil 1 GL-4 is thinner, does Nissan use a thicker weight GL-5 oil????? I put in 75W90 Mobil 1 GL-5 in the rear end, is this thick enough for the gears, its just seems that the OEM fluid was really thick.

Thanks for the help

Gear oil

The 75W90 Mobil 1 GL 5 that you put in the rear is a good choice. The original oil was 80W90 but 75W90 works also. Amsoil does make a GL4 80W90 synthetic, it is series AGT and the smallest container sold is a gallon. Here is a link to the gear oil page on the website:
http://intershop.amsoil.com/cgi-bin/...9/Catalog/1160
It list for $19.10 a gallon which is not bad. I paid about $8.00 per quart for Red Line.

I hope this helps

that must be why the New Mobil 1 75W90 was thinner in body. I won't have any heat problems, will I? Should I get the 80W90? Does it really matter? I don't want to blow out the rear end!!!!

I think I am going to get 9 quarts of MT-90 for the tranny and the transfer case. GL-4 redline. I can use this in the transfer case too Right?

Thanks for the help to all

Put ATF (automatic trans. fluid) in the transfer case. Mobile 1 makes synthetic ATF, and it's about $3.00 less a quart than the MT-90. Check your manual. My 2002 calls for ATF in the transfer case.
