Oil filter questions (smaller OK?)

Is it all right to use the larger oil filter made for the 1997 KA24E engine on a 1998 KA24DE? I want to do this only because the extra length makes it easier to remove the filter. The engine's machined surface is made for it.

Also I forgot to apply oil to the filter gasket. I've never done that before. How bad is this, especially when the mating surface was cleaned really well?

As long as the diameter is the same and the gasket seals/seats I would assume it ok. Chances are they don't match though.

It does fit mechanically, even though the diameter is about 1/2" bigger (engine block is machined so this isn't a problem).

I don't see how a larger oil filter can hurt. In fact, the larger filter has a larger filter element which can only help.

The filter that fits the ka24e was the same filter that fit 91 -97 ka24de in the altimas and 240sx.
THey probably didnt change the mounting surface so i would assume ok but im not sure.
98 was when they switched to a smaller filter most likely for envirometal issues.
Smaller filters take up less space in the landfills im assuming.
