now I am looking at both a standard cab and king cab 1995. King cab has high mileage while the standard cab is just over 100k. Both have minor issues yet the king cab sort of feels like it is in 4 wheel drive at 55mph. Today I am going back to give each truck a closer look.

If the King Cab is a V6 model, it should have automatic hubs, and they may be sticking. The thing might actually BE in 4WD! The indicator light on the dashboard should say.
This is an argument for replacing them with manual hubs. The 4-cyl trucks came with manual from the factory. The V6 had automatic and many have changed them back to manual.
Put the truck in 2wd and back up for 10-20 feet; if they're working properly, they should be unlocked after that. Then, jack up just one of the front wheels. Spin the tire and see if the CV shaft turns along with it. The shaft should not turn if the hubs are unlocked. And with the auto hubs, they should be unlocked if you have it in 2wd and have backed up a few feet to unlock them.
Is it a wobbly feel as you drive down the road? It's probably the centerlink. While you have it jacked up shake the tire back and forth and see how much movement you have or watch the centerlink at the idler arm on the passenger side. If it's doing a lot of moving than it should be replaced.

Well I called the dealer prior to leaving work to tell him I was coming to consider buying the truck and when I got there they were closed. Sort of pissed me off considering he knew I was on the way there. I may try again Thursday.
Hey Jason, if you are over new New River, look over the Burgundy XE king cab they have there and tell me what you think. They want $9900 for it. They told me over the phone if I paid cash they would sell for $9300. I consider this a bit much for what the truck comes with ie. air conditioning and a radio. I am going to talk to them and try a hard sell for decent trade in value on my BMW. If it works out then maybe I will have their truck and if not then I will hold out and repair what's broken on this green 95 SE I have been look at this week.

Roanoke, Va the Star City of the south. I lived there from '80 to '86 and I loved every minute of it. Great City and Great area. I work at a nissan dealer in Columbus Ohio and I agree with everything thats been said. The prices that have been quoted to you at the dealers seem high, maybe its just the difference in markets. Both the V6's and the 4 Cyl. engines are very strong engines and either one will last 200k+miles if they are well maintained. A truck that has only 64k miles that has been well maintained isn't even broken in yet. I would try to find one with a 5 spd as the autos are prone to some problems. The V6 is a little more costly to maintain(t belt, manifold bolts, P.A.I.R. secondary air systems, IACV systems are all more complex on the V6. The 4 cylinders are truly bulletproof(t chain, hydralic rockers etc.) and they are a peice of cake to work on. I have friends and coworkers that have 250,000 miles on theirs and have never done anything to them besides routine maintenance. (Oil changes, Tune ups, belts, hoses, waterpumps, etc.) Will any of these dealers let you take the truck to an independent mechanic to have it evaluated? If so I'd do it. A person that is experienced maybe be able to point out a problem that could be caused by poor maintence or hard use. This post reminds me of the trips to Mill Mt. and Floyd Mt, The Blue Ridge Parkway, Smith Mt lake and all the other great things about the area. Makes me want to come down and help you look for that truck just to see the area again. I would buy the one that turned out to be the best maintained, best condition truck because 1k-2k savings in purchase price can be eaten up in repair costs pretty quick on just 4wd repairs alone.
Good luck on your search.
Bob
PS,
I was a VT Hokies fan when I lived in Va. But I gotta say go Buckeyes beat Miami for the national championship.
I too am a transplant to this area. We used to live in TN and made our way here for work reasons. One thing led to another and we stayed (8 years now). This seems to be a very good area to raise children ie. education, crime, etc. However, a VT fan I am not and this is mainly because of extremely weak scheduling. They have had some good teams over the last 10 years though. Yet the scheduling thing really bothers me regarding VT, way too light (non-conference scheduling) and the over kill hype they receive when they beat a very weak team.
I also agree about the 4 cylinder engine vs v6. Access to everything is much easier in the 4 cylinder and power differences for my use really doesn't warrant me pursuing a v6. Although the v6 I have been looking into is priced very cheaply. I could easily do any work necessary on it with its apparent auto Hub problems yet time is a major factor with three children and my wife and me working. I also agree about the monetary savings of buying a well maintained truck. My plan is to negotiate strongly for a more expensive competent truck. Should be interesting.
Speaking of the Buckeyes. I remember when they were #1 and played WVU in the mid 90's and, of course won. I went to the Ohio State game in 1987 when they really beat WVU and had Spellman (sp.) as their top linebacker. The next year we went to the national championship game against Notre Dame and lost. Maybe the Buckeyes will win out this time.
thanks for the information. Merry Christmas

Sure, I'll go check that truck at New River for ya! I might be tomorrow morning getting there, though...I'm in Pulaski now and we have some more family plans for the rest of the day. I'll try to sneak out tomorrow and look at it.
$9900 sounds pretty high, no matter what condition. I agree with bobbman, these trucks are bulletproof and I wouldn't have a problem buying one from an independent used car lot. You still need to check it over, sure, but I think your chances of getting a good one are pretty high. I bought my '95 King Cab from College Motors in Blacksburg for $3900. Only reason is the mileage (173k). Everything works perfectly, it's got the bucket seats and center console, etc. There's a burgundy Nissan on a lot on the south side of Rt. 114 between the public service authority and the Radford Arsenal. I don't know the price, but there's one there. There's also a burgundy Nissan on a lot on the north side of Rt. 114 about a mile out of Christiansburg. Again, don't know the price, but keep driving by it.
I'd check these independent lots; they'll probably be a little less expensive than a Nissan dealership. And for the age, I doubt you'll get a warranty buying it through Nissan (but you may).
I went and looked at the truck and it's very clean. Everything looks intact and operating. The radio is non-stock. The interior looks clean and so does the body/frame. There are no graphics or pinstripes on the side...it's plain burgundy.
It does come with a warranty -- the box was checked. I don't know what their warranty entails, but it's certainly worth checking on. I don't know whether it'd make the purchase worth it, but it's something to ask about for sure.
Some details about this '95:
XE model, king cab, bucket seats/center console, A/C, aftermarket radio, 4-cyl, 5-speed, 4WD, manual hubs, bedliner. Some dings/dents on the rear bumper. The front bumper looked clean as far as I remember. I didn't open the hood. The salesman was pretty pushy and tried to get me to drive it, etc. I said I was just looking at it for a friend. He gave me two cards, his name is Darryl Thornton or something like that (I threw the cards away). Because was was so pushy/rude, I'd probably specifically NOT deal with him.
That's all I can report on. We're on our way to Charlotte now to catch a flight out to San Francisco. I'm excited to see what you find out when I get back!
well I went down there and they told me you came by to look at the vehicle. Our encounter didn't last very long. They want far more money than it's worth. They wanted $9900. I offered my BMW and $7500 cash. I even asked about the depreciation that results with the new year and he wouldn't give me that too. Then the guy pulls out the NADA book and begins to show me "the numbers" on how a low mileage vehicle is worth more, etc. he then goes on to tell me how they sell cars to stay in business. I think he was trying an emotional approach. So was I with my three kids. Both avenues didn't work. I politely thanked him for his time and left.
Now I will go back to my previous two trucks with multiple problems to see where they take me.
thanks for looking into it. I wanted a second opinion. By the way there was no mentioning of a warranty.
