Trouble Codes 455 328

Trouble Codes 455 328

455 is Evaporative Emmissions Control System Leak and I think 328 is a knock sensor. These are probably related ... anyone with any ideas on a course of action to remedy this/these issue(s)?

Thanks,
Keith

please post year/model/milage!

I will assum your code discripts are correct.

EVAP leak means just that, there is a leak in the system. check all hoses and fuel lines for any cracks or splits and make sure gas cap is tight.

knock sensor is for detecting engine ping and is difficult to even guess without knowing the year/model because of diferrent designs. I realy cant think of a relation between the two at this time.

2002 Xterra 67000 miles

Thanks. I checked the cap, reset the code ad it has not popped up again - I'm checking hoses today just in case. I'll keep an eye out for the knock sensor again but any guesses would be appreciated.

Are you familiar with the whine in the rear diff? I undersand it is a common problem with the '02. Are there any solutions other than replacing it? I've tried an oil change and replaced it with a synthetic and it may be a little better, but it is stil there.

Thanks again.

The noise you refer to is rather common and have seen the noise go away using synthetic additives but not always. If its a faint whine I wouldn't worry.

The two most common reasons for the 455 on exterras are leeking or loose gas cap and leaking canister purge valve(usualy dirty or siezed in open position).

The 328 is high input to the ECM from the knock sensor could be faulty sensor, but needs thourough testing to be sure. This is likely out of your leag if you dont have access to nissan shop manual.

Angry Knock Sensor problem as well....Help!

Another newbie on a quest. Where is the knock sensor located on a Frontier Crew Cab SE? By the way it's a 2001. Went to Monroe... They came up with two error codes. One the Knock Sensor, the other had something to do with exhaust, but they told me they couldn't read that code because "It was a code that only the dealers have"????? They also told me that driving around with a bad sensor could blow my valves.

Anybody with any answers?

yes a bad knock sensor can cause damage to an engine if it is alowing the engine to ping. just because you have a code for the knock sensor dosn't mean it is bad though. It needs to be properly diagnosed and it will take a good bit of work to get to it if needing replacement. The newer nissan have gone to 2 knock sensors I think but not sure. the older one that have 1 sensor are mounted in the vally under the intake. with skill and patience some of them can be replaced without removal of the intake. Some can not. sorry for the vage answer but I figured it was better than no answer.

The issue about other codes; some codes may not have been retrievable if the scanner they used is not CAN compliant it's a protocal that old scanners can not read. You can buy a scanner yourself for around $30 but it is limited and may not read those codes either. The scanners that most shops and dealers use range from $2,000-$15,000 and they usualy spend between $300- $3,000 a year on updates. This is why it costs so much to "just read your codes" at a dealer or descent repair shop.
