Well i have been looking for a huntin truck and been looking at toyota's, but everyone is too rusty. anyways, one of my customers has a 1986.5 nissan she wants to get rid of for 1500. Well the body and frame are perfect, its a XE longbed 4x4, but has been sitting for quit sometime and has 165,000 miles on it. It rides and drives great, except for a rough idle, and rough until it hits 1500 rpms, after that, it runs like a new truck. So my quest is, is this truck worth it, (new tires, needs brake work and speedometer doesnt work). And what is the cause of this bad idle (puffing black smoke). I know the basics, could be bad gas, just need a tune-up, o2 sensor, .....
But I didnt want to purchase it knowing it could be more serious, so I wanted to ask you guys/girls, if anyone has had the exact same problem, any common sensors cause this?
anyways, sorry for the long first post, but just want some more info before i buy the truck
With that many miles, and the black smoke, it probably needs a new oxygen sensor, as well as a complete tuneup. I would go for it, it sounds like a good deal. 165k is nothing for a Nissan...it's still a baby. 300,000 miles is quite possible. I have seen them with 4 and 500k still running fine.
Need some more help again. well I went and drove the truck again and it would either run perfect or act up idling. So the guy im buying it from contacted the previous owner and said it was the "choke control", whatever that means.....Anyone know what he is talking about. mind you this truck is fuel injected, so I need some help here. Expensive to fix?
Hmm...i don't know about a 'choke control' on an EFI vehicle, but it could be the idle mixture is messed up, or the oxygen sensor is gone resulting in an overly rich mix. does it belch black smoke while you are driving or just at idle?

Yes, it does puff black smoke while driving (only if it is acting up), and at idle. It either runs perfect, or hesitates and runs really rich.
One thing i did notice is when it is running rough at low rpms, if i go to half throttle, it clears up. So i thought it was an induction issue, but the filter it fine.
im still clueless, so did skeptical about buying the truck...
