Hello all,
First post and I may rant some so please bear with me. Any advise or answers to problems are welcome.
2004 SL w/ 33k
There is only ONE tire made to fit this van and it is the POS Goodyear LS2. I have had to by 2 already and it really PO's me that there is no other 225/65/16 out there. Why did Nissan use that odd size tire? The tire is crap, rides poorly, wears poorly and handles poorly.
The Quest is very roomy and comfortable to the family with the exception of me and I can just deal with that. It is not comfy alt all on trips for me either driving or riding. Oh well. The wife and kid love it.
The dealership I purchased from has a service dept. that is totally outrageous.
They are rued and condescending as well. They charge $180 for a trans. flush as just one example. $600 for a 30K service package!!!! Is this the norm for most Nissan dealerships? And they insist on using all of these "additives" in the oil and trans. I thought it was common knowledge that with todays oils additive are not at all necessary. $$$$$$$$
Now, to the one real problem I have had with the van. There is a persistent "popping" noise coming from underneath the van. It does not relate to steering at all but with traveling over normal rode conditions and the dips in the road. Like when the body has to flex a bit. A dip on one side of the road or another. It will also do it over speed bumps if I go over them one wheel at a time. If I go over the speed bump with both front wheels together I do not hear the "pop". And it does not come from the front of the van so much as under the passenger compartment, under the front seats specifically.
Now, a few months ago the dealership told me that the "carriage" was out of alignment and that it appears that I must have HIT something. Well they aligned the "carriage" under warranty but wanted me to pay for their $129.95 alignment. I refused, took it to Kauffman and they used the same machine and aligned it for $59.95 and took it back to the dealership. At that point they said I was hearing the brake pads. I have not had the strength or time to take it back since. And need to give them time to forget me for I was less than polite after all of the discussions over this problem. Anyway, has anyone had this problem and could someone educate me on the "carriage" or chassis or whatever and why it may be making these noises.
Thanks and next posts will be more clear and concise.

Hi Scott,
This is my first visit to this site too....I'm so glad to see that there are others out there w/complaints about the Quest. I have a 2004 Silver SE and from the 2nd month I had it ,it has given me problems.....The main one being my power side door decides to open back up on its own.To date I have taken the car 15 times for this problem and they STILL haven't been able to fix it. We also had a lot of electrical problems. As well as I have had 3 different radios installed. I have had the car for just over 2 years and this past July w/23,0000 miles on it we had a major engine problem. The service guy told my husband the engine looked like it NEVER had an oil change. We had of course(7 ) It took them 3 weeks to fix. I am at my wits end, but love the van itself.......
Thanks, That felt great!
Marie
Hi Marie,
We had the same problem with the power door. I figured it out myself and so far so good. Make sure the silver electrical connections on the door and the door jam are clean. This is where they meet when the door closes. And, our door handle, outside handle, would stick "open" and cause the door to back up when it was almost closed. Once we figured out that the handle was sticking in the open or pulled out position I just sprayed it with somw silicon lube and all is well for 3 months now.
I have been using Mobil 1 synthetic in ours for awhile now and change oil and filter regularly. Actually moreso than needed with Mobil1. I hope ours does not sludge up.
Good luck
Scott

Yep... issues with my 2004 SL in Silver. The electrical door issue just surfaced for me, so I'll take a look at the connector, and see if the handle is sticking.
Mine has 27,000 on it and I've had it about 16 months now. Engine hunts on deceleration, tires wearing and squeel, seat foam, map pocket broken when I bought it off the lot with 30 miles on it, rattles galore even after several warranty repairs and all the recall fixes, basically everything everyone else has been suffering.
Im done with the dealerships too. I'll be doing my own work from now on, and I'll be upgrading some of the stuff to that of the 06 models, eg LCD display, audio, climate control etc etc.
Thankfully the 05s have been straightened out! and the 5 spd on the 05 SLs is worth trading up from an 04 SL! Our 04 had sliding door problems but not much else.....oh and a front pipe on the exhaust. Our new 05 has been flawless. And I have to say....the GoodYears on this one are better as well.
Just use a 225/60 16 tire. That is the same size that came on the crown vic/grand marquis/town cars. There are lots more sizes available, and 5% shorter tire will hardly be noticable. It will have SLIGHTLY better acceleration (you won't notice) and you will use SLIGHTLY more gas (you won't notice that either). Michelin makes the 60 series tire. Can't go wrong w/ Michelin.

My concern though would be none of these. You'll be adding 5% more miles to the odometer than you are actually traveling. Every 10,000 miles means you've traveled 9500. At 100,000 miles that 5000 miles less than the odometer. Gets expensive at trade in time. With a 235/60 option its 1500 miles by the time your at 100,000 miles. Either will work, but I prefer to not have to calibrate the speedo in my head as I'm traveling.
UK quest.. "Ok, now did I just speed past that cop or not"
Mrs UKquest.. "Rant, rant, rant ,blah, blah, tire, not change, your fault, closer match, blah, etc."
235/60 16 is a plus zero size...wider, but almost the same overall diameter. the difference is the 235/60 is 0.40 inches shorter. there will be a negligible decrease in gas mileage, and a negligible increase in acceleration. Your speedometer/odometer will be SLIGHTLY (read: not noticable) off. If it says you are going 60, then you may be going 61 (or 59, can't remember if shorter makes your speedo + or -). I guess the 235/60 would be the better size, because a 225/60 would be 0.80 inch difference in overall diameter.
OK, after some digging on the internet, here is the exact information: a 225/65/16 tire is 1.5% taller than a 235/60/16 tire. With the 235/60 tire, when your speedometer reads 70, you are really only going 68.95 mph. So there is no need to worry about speeding...you are actually going 1.05 mph slower than the speedo reads. Only downside is your odometer will show more miles than you really have.
Wow, we just bought a 05 quest and absolutly love it.
We have had two problems. The seal in the windshield leaked and the sliding door on the drivers side was creaking on rough roads.
Both of these issues were fixed, and the dealer we bought from was excellent!
In may of this year we tried to buy from our local dealer but as some have mentioned they were downright RUDE!!
So in turn my wife and I drove 1.5 hrs to the dealer we bought from and have never (in 20yrs of car buying) had a better experience.
When they couldn't fix the van on the first service call because they needed parts they kept it and sent me home 1.5hrs away so they could get it fixed. When it was done they brought the van to us and picked up their loaner. and put gas in our van without charging us to boot!

Beware of changing tire sizes unless you can also match up the load/speed rating of 99H. This changes the overall ride feel of the car not to mention the fact that the vehicle was never tested with a tire other than the standard OE size.
I have a harmonic vibration felt through the steering wheel on my 04 Quest S most probably caused by the OE tires. Over long distances, the shaking causes numbness of the hands. The dealer has attempted to resolve the problem three times before ultimately declaring that this is the normal operating condition of the vehicle. This is a log of what was done to resolve the issue:
28-Jun-05 @ 29,972 miles - Replaced all four Goodyear Eagle LS 225/65R16 99H tires as per dealer recommendation. Reason: worn. This is when the shimmy effect became obvious. The problem was reported to the dealer.
15-Aug-05 @ 32,305 miles - Re balanced all 4 tires. No effect.
22-Aug-05 @ 32,727 miles - Replaced front two tires. Tires road force balanced. No effect.
7-Sep-05 @ 33,101 miles - Re balanced all wheels and checked road force. Checked front hub runout. Adjusted steering rack force. Cleaned all mating surfaces between hub and rotor and rotor and wheel. Dealer claims road tested OK. No effect.
28-Sep-05 @ 33,985 miles - Road test. Dealer states normal operating condition for vehicle.
I have reported this issue to NHTSA Office of Defect Investigation (ODI Number 01038670).

I don't see anywhere that they replaced any rims. If you replaced all the tires and balanced and rebalanced with no effect, it's not the tires. I'd make them swap tires and rims from a new van and see if it goes away. If not, I'd try front rotors next. Rotors usually only do that while braking but I've heard of others that were so bad they did it all the time.

UKquest,
I have already replaced 2 tires,at 21,000 miles and we are still after 20 months having problems with the power door. We gave the dealer more than ample opportunities to fix it and we still haven't gotten what we paid for!
Oh, by the way the Lemon Law in NJ SUCKS...........I have been trying for 1 yr. now to get this car thing settled. They came back w/$1700......and OH they have to fix the car!!!!!???????? We tried that a year ago. But, we were left with NO other legal means. They couldn't get the power door to act up like it does for me????? FORGET about all the other electrical problems I've had. It really makes me sick. After paying $28,000(for my first brand new car) and getting a LEMON! So now I'm back at square one w/letting the dealer play games w/getting work done.
Has any one out there with a 04 Quest had any problems with the driver side seat moving? That just started a few months ago!?

You must have problems or driving real hard, as all 4 of my tires are evenly worn and are about 40% tread remaining at 28,000 miles.
Having owned a Subaru WRX and everyone compliaing how bad the stock tires were, I never understand how some people drive. I replaced my original tires at 76,000 miles and people were saying they sucked and lasted 10,000 miles. Not saying you are driving like this, just wondering how I got 7 times the tire lifespan of everyone else. And I dont consider myself gentle on the car either.
My drivers side power seat moves but I think thats from rubbing the badly positioned switches when I get in and out.
I think 215/70/16 is going the wrong way. That 70 sidewall is to big and flexible. You will notice more roll in corners and more front end dip in hard braking. I still stand by my 225/60/16 suggestion which has a better contact patch and similar sidewall size.
The Kumho ECSTA was my suggestion based on price per performance. Its dropped in price to $66 now and its an ultra high performance all season tire. Its load rating is less than the standard goodyear, stock = 99 (1709lbs), Kumho = 98 (1953lbs) A reduction of 56lbs. Considering you cant get the tow package anymore, I dont think the lower load rating is a problem unless you plan on carrying 500lbs of crap in the back. Speed rating is better, stock is rated to 130mph, and Kumho is rated to 149mph.
I'll visit this thread when I get a chance to put some of these on the van.
Actually, there are different wheels available for the Quest in 16 and 17 inch diameter, there is a selection of tires out there for the 17 inch diameter wheel. By the way, the factory optional 17 inch Goodyear tires have a load rating of 98.
