help with 96 nissan quest

We have a 96 Nissan Quest GXE. All of a sudden the check engine light came on and it is going into 2nd gear rather hard. After 2nd gear it is fine to drive. The first 'transmission shop' we took it to advised that according to the codes the sylenoids needed to be replaced. We did that- $325. Still nothing- so we replaced the TCU (transmission control unit)- $100
Check engine light still on- Still changing hard- but not as bad I don't think.
Took vehicle to another Transmission shop- they ran code check and now tell us that is is possibly the knock sensor- $425. Does this sound right? Is there anything else this could possibly be?
This van has many miles on it and probably not worth another $425 however we really are not in a position to trade for another vehicle either. I guess I am praying for a miracle.

In Nissans the knock sensor is very common but will not trigger the CEL and usually doesn't cause any issues. Is the CEL still on, if so then there are other codes than the knock sensor. Also, a TPS out of adjustment can cause a bunch of gear ratio error codes and hard shifting. Can you find out what the original codes were that the first transmission shop retrieved?
