Hey there folks. I saw some talk a while ago about some of you guys putting in synthetic in your transmissions and was wondering what type and viscosity of oil you would recomend. I'm going to use mobil1 in the engine. A friend of mine told me to just use mobil1 10w30 engine oil in the trans but that sounds maybe too thin, thanks.

I've never heard of using motor oil in an automatic transmission.
Mobil1 does make fully synthetic transmission fluid which has the same synthetic advantages over conventional transmission fluid. I just saw it on the shelf at PepBoys for $6.99 a quart.

Your owner's manual should have the weight/gl-rating you need to use. You can get some OM information from here... http://www.nissan-techinfo.com/nissan/
If its a manual it calls for 75w90 GL4 oil. 75W90 redline MT90 worked great in my 97 hardbody 4x2 and my friends 95 hardbody 4x4.
For some reason my 04 frontier with the same tranny as my 97 hardbody did not like mt90.
The 04 does call for 75w85 but i think nissan speced that weight mainly for shift quality but i would think it would sacrifice a little protection.
Yeah its a manual trans, the slug 4 speed at that. I looked on the mobil website and i didn't see any heavy weight trans oils, but then again i didn't notice any automatic stuff either. I live in Alberta Canada so some of the stuff from the states is not as common here like redline and amsoil although I'm sure I can find it now that I know what kind to look for thanks alot guys. By the way anyone ever swap a 4speed to a 5 speed? Any idea what the differences are?
Almost forgot. There are some cars that call for engine oil in the manual trans, I had a 1983 cavalier and it said it right on the dipstick I almost fell over. So it wasn't a total suprise when my friend suggested it. He runs it in a Mitsubishi 3000 all wheel drive twin turbo v6, as it comes recomended by the gurus so to speak as an upgrade.
Mobil makes great lubes but none of them are GL4 rated.
They are GL5 which has additives that will corrode the brass synchros in nissan trannys and shifting performance will be poor.
