ok ive about racked my brains on my ignition system... for a while it was boggin down when i gave it alot of gas on teh freeway... and in early mornings it was having a ruff idle untill it warmed up... also the check battery light would kinda light up but then go away..
well last week on teh frwy the engine just shut down...
i still have all electronical things work radio lights etc
the engine turns over but no spark
now heres the deal ive replaced the wires. spark plug, rotor, distributar cap
i have ohmed out both coils (2 since its a z24) both within spec,,, and the ignition modules ( right before the coils) are both gettin 12vs and the coils on the high tension end are gettin 12 volts and 9.6 when crankin.. yet im still gettin no spark.. any thoughs? ive about gone mad tryin to trouble shoot this.. what other relays and fuses should i check? i know theres an ignition relay under the dash but what else should i b lookin for? could that relay b the problem? oh also the distributor does turn... ive cranked it over while the cap was off

detailed answers please.... thanks
Here's something a little vague but better than nothing. If interested davinci... read on.
Have you checked the throttle body for correct voltage? You may not be getting the correct voltage where it should be just under 5 volts under normal operating conditions. You may be getting no voltage at all.
eek. Sounds like we've got a similar problem. I'll be very interested to hear what you learn.
This happened to us - around town it ran great, then we took it on the tnpk and it bogged - like it was running out of fuel ... 'eventually stalled out. It want to start again, but we have no spark. 'Got it towed to the dealership where it sat for just over a week. The only thing they could find was the shaft into the distributor came loose, which toasted the distributor. Dealership then claims we have an electrical problem from the distributor problem - that either our coil or ECU could be toast because of this. We towed it home from the dealership, did the distributor ourselves, reset the timing, everything electrical *seems* to check out except this new thing I've learned about: the "transistor distributor unit" under the coil. It was reading wrong, so we replaced it. *STILL NO SPARK*.
Dude - we feel your pain. We've been rebuilding this truck for a year now. We just wanna play with it. :P
oh man that sucks to hear... i hope its not as serious as that.. .well im going out of town this weekend but when i come back iim goin to change the ingnition relay under the dash and see what i get... other then that im clueless another thought...
on the backside of the ignition module (little black box before coils) theres three wires goin in.. one is a ground wich is the black/red stripe... then theres a black/yellow and a yellow, now one of those is gettin 12v to ground.. the other isnt gettin anyting .. could this b my problem? maybe a secondary circuit for the coil? iono im just throwin stuff out, im not a mechanic but i am an electrician... just not used to this car stuff any help would b great
also is there a way i can check codes on this older model truck? if so let me know how and where i can find the code meanings on the net.. thanks everyone
'Read our ecu codes (*correctly*, finally), and got codes 11 ("...ecu not receving a proper signal from the crank angle sensor" (distributor)) & 41 ("...the air temp sensor is not providing a proper signal to the ecm").
'Had the mgr (very cool guy) at our local AutoZone give us printouts of these two codes. 'Cool thing is (which we didn't know) is that these printouts also give *suggestions* as to what may be causing the problems; what to test, etc.
At any rate, it's 9:pm, and we just got our chinese food. I think we're done for the night.
ok after talkin to a mechanic he says since im gettin voltage to the coils but no sparking from coil wire he thinks my ic unit inside teh bottom of the distributer is out, so its not sending the signal to ecu to spark the coil and suggests to get a used one from junk yard and try it out.. now im trying to source a distributor
I have the same problem with an 86.5 and it's driving me nuts. I can let the truck sit for a week then it will work fine untill about 3/4 throttle. I have checked and/or replaced everything except the ECU or the distributor base.
I think it has something to do with the computer just because it is fine one second and not the next, not like something is coming loose or wearing out.
will it turn over or just a "click", if its just a click, look for a blue relay on the right side of the engine bay, two separate plugs going into it, hold the ignition in the start position and have someone tap on the relay and it should start. if it turns over, (stupid question here) have you checked the alternator?
ok my engine turns over im just not gettin spark through teh distributer... im gettin the 12 v out of the coil wire but no spark jumping ....
i took out the seat and got to the ecu now when i turned on in ignition and turned it to diagnostic mode this is what i got
2 long flasshes of red and green same time pause
3 short red and green same time pause
4 short red and green same time pause
5 short red and green same time pause
1 long red and green same time pause
2 long red and green same time pause
3 short red and green same time pause
4 short red and green same time pause
5 short red and green same time pause
cycle starts over with ^
did i do something wrong? cause not once did the red or green flas by itself
and what would i check the alternator for? if the alternator wasnt workin wouldnt i not b gettin any voltage through the coils? or am i wrong and thats run off the batery?
if so how do i check the alt and what should i b lookin for
It's gotta be the computer, I get the same two lights flashing. Everything else in the engine compartment checks out. As for the not spark thing, when mine quits completely, there is like a random spark. Then after a few days I can start it up again, but as soon as you put any real throttle on it - bam it's messed up again.
man this is kiling me, ive been 3 weeks now without my truck... and i dont wanna spend 180 bucks on a rebuilt bottom end of the distributer if its not the ic unit.... and all the junkyards around here cant seem to source me one, none of them have um..... i also dont know if i would b able to find a spare computer... man what a day
Is this a Z24I? Sorry if I missed that. Clean all connectors and grounds throught the truck. Mine threw all different kinds of fits(stumbling on acceleration, cutting out, fuel pump quit, hard starting when warmed up, and even fuel guage quit) till I spent an afternoon doing this. If the voltage can't properly go thru a connector, it will throw the puter off.
