'90 Hardbody KA24E ECU code deciphering

Howdy.

I've searched around on the internet and on this forum and have downloaded an array of ECU codes, but the one my ECU is flashing confuses me.

Here's what it's doing - in terms of morse code - and both red & green lights flash simultaneously:

long dash; dash-dash; dot-dot-dot; dot-dot-dot-dot; dot-dot-dot-dot-dot
(and the loop repeats)

Does anyone have any experience/advice? We've been working on this truck for a year now (frame-off restoration) and we're getting tired. :P

'Nobody?

Okay, here's more info on the problem:

- 'Truck won't start - it really wants to start, but it won't kick over.

- We're getting this ECU code (my initial post, above) repeatedly. We can't clear out the code (either that, or it's the same problem/error code that hasn't been fixed, so it keeps flashing)

I'm hoping the ECU isn't fried - and that I'm not interpreting the codes properly. I'd like suggestions before I shell out the $330 for a re-man'ed one.

Please reply.

here is some temp info:

red flash = the 10s place, green flash = the 1's place. 3 red flashes is 30, 3 green flashes is 3. if it flashes red 4 times and green 2 times, its a code 42 (if such code exists). i will post more info in a while, i just gotta find it. this is true info for my '94, i am not sure about the '90.

ok, here is a link with the rest. scroll about half way down to the "self diagnostic" heading. mode 3 is probably what you want.

Thanks for replying - I appreciate the input.

I'm still lost though. I'm stuck in Mode III. I've got printouts of the code info (just like that link you posted), how to clear code info, etc., ...but maybe I'm not reading the code loop right.

If each loop flashes both lights simultaneously as follows:

"long dash; dash-dash; dot-dot-dot; dot-dot-dot-dot; dot-dot-dot-dot-dot"
...and then a pause. Then the loops starts over.

So is the ECU really telling me: 15 red flashes and 15 green flashes, for a code of "1515"? If so, what the heck is a code "1515"?

Are you sure you are in mode 3? I am not really sure, but from the info i have found it sounds like you are in mode 2. That is the only time both lights should flash at the same time. after you turn the switch fully clockwise, wait til the led flashes 3 quick bursts, then turn it fully counter clockwise to enter mode 3. from what you describe, both flashing at the same time, your a/f mix is fine.

Hey deathtorice -

('Question - don't you *have* 'rice'? I mean, personally, I'm almost 'there', but I don't want to kill the truck yet...)) ;-)

Anyway, you were absolutely right <smacks forehead>...

'Read our ecu codes (*correctly*, this time - in Mod III, thank you very much), and got codes 11 ("...ecu not receving a proper signal from the crank angle sensor" (distributor)) & 41 ("...the air temp sensor is not providing a proper signal to the ecm").

'Had the mgr (very cool guy) at our local AutoZone give us printouts of these two codes. 'Cool thing is (which we didn't know) is that these printouts also give *suggestions* as to what may be causing the problems; what to test, etc.

It [almost] always pays to brainstorm 'cause someone else will see something that you won't.

T'anks, man!

lol, at least you figured it out. naw, i don't have rice. it may be japaneese, but i dont have a 6" fart tip, 3 tier wing, gay body kit, and shitty graphics (other than the stock ones). my truck has no negative camber. i don't have a big stereo. i don't drive my truck like its an f1 car, because i know that a 134 hp truck is not fast. that name goes back to my first car, a 1973 monte carlo with a built to hell 400 small block bored to a 409 with a big roller cam, and some heavily modified bowtie heads with 2.05/1.64 valves, and a bunch of other goodies. 450 wheel hp.

Ahhh ... NOW we're talkin'.
Once the truck is done, the next project is the '79 Formula (6.6/403; boared out to "I-can't-remember-*what*-now"). Personally, I'd love to work on an 'Eleanore', but I don't have that kind of patience. ('Truth be told, my "love" list is way too long for my wallet.)

LOL ... Oh, I hear ya' (about 'rice'). I know what'cha mean. My daily driver is an '02 WRX. My car has some mods to it, but nothing ridiculous. It's funny - I don't see many riced-out scoobies - 'like it's in some "other" classification ('seems to be true with the Evo, too). I know - 'no one's "immune" though...

...But our truck does have "the" stereo. I gotta have my tunes...

(How do you post pics here, anyway...?)
