Title so searches will bring this up. My starter was cranking really slowly on my '96 SE 4x4 so i started looking at the ground leads starting from the battery. A slow starter should be a ground problem so i'm looking for the loose wire and low and behold there's this braided copper wire that grounds the starter to the cab. And its broken and lightly touching the frame rail. The starter tested "weakly" and i'm glad that it gave me warning so i wasn't stuck pushing my truck across a parking lot trying to start it. TGFMT (thank god for manual transmissions)
So as i examine the starter it becomes clear that the starter is sealed to the block with grey import gasket material - Making the grounding wire necessary as there is not enough contact between the bolts and the starter's housing.
Replaced the crappy wire with 4 gauge 19" starter wire i found at autozone for $4. Just a little longer than necessary but a good fix. Replaced starter with used from junkyard.
Highly recommending Brim's junkyard in Kenton OH. Good folks there and they'll ship. Giant yard and they'll have all your parts on hand. -
