I HAVE A 1987 HARDBODY 4X4 WITH A Z24. AS SOON AS I TURN ON MY AIRCONDITIONING, MY ENGINE DROPS TO LIKE 400 RPM AND THE TRUCK IS LIKE A DOG WHEN I DRIVE, ITS HARD TO KEEP IT A 50 MPH. IT NORMALLY IDLES AROUND 900-1000 RPM. IT WILL DO ABOUT 85 ON THE EXPRESSWAY. THE AIR COMES OUT ICE COLD. ANY SUGGESTIONS? BAD COMPRESSOR?
As strange as it sounds, I'd say that's kinda normal. Mine does the same thing. It takes a lot to turn over a compressor, especially on a little 4-cylinder. The RPMs drop, as they should, because of the extreme load the compressor is acting as.
And yes, these trucks are as slow as a dog with the air on.
