I've replaced starters on 4 different vehicles (sorry, not a Nissan yet) and they all were pretty simple (once you could get to them). They were pretty much two bolts holding the starter on and then the wiring. The only reason I could think he'd warn you about the oil sending unit is that it may be in the way when you try to get the starter out and might get damaged.
