pathfinder speedo/odometer malfunction

my '96 pathfinder speedo and odometer has stopped working! also the o/d on light now flashes 16 times on starting the engine! does anybody know what this code means? i'm sure it is a reference to the dead speedo/odometer?

Bad Vehicle Speed Sensor maybe?
Can you read the computer codes?

I would second the Speed Sensor conclusion. They are pretty easy to change. It's on passengers side of the bell housing. Just don't get one from Auto Zone, get a factory original.

Thank you for your reply. The Nissan dealer I took car to found there was a "vehicle over speed" flag up on his diagnostic machine. He cleared this but the problem remained. Perhaps your VSS failure theory is correct. I will follow this up. thankyou.
