Arbor press

I guess I'll be the first real post...

Anyone have any experience with those little arbor presses? Like the 1 ton ones that operate off a hand crank and not the two post hydraulic ones.

Mostly I need it to push out some suspension pushings out of my 240, I'm wondering if 1 ton of force is enough to get the job done for most of the bushings.

imo, it should be. we use all hand crank presses at my work, the biggest one being a 2 ton(?) press. it easily pushed out all of my ex g/f's bushings on her bmw.

If you ever do control arm bushings, you're going to wish you had the hydraulic one. the screw-type will work on the smaller bushings, but the large ones with the metal outer sleeves are a total PITA to replace..

Plus if you ever have to do wheel bearings, you're going to need a hydraulic one. not a fun job on a hand-crank press.

i've heard some unhappy stories from machine shops that didn't enjoy pressing bushings into b11 control arms, even with the hydraulic press and a full set of tools they can still be a PITA.

we have the hand crank ones, but they have an arm on the side with a cheater bar on them... cranking them in would be next to impossible without the cheater bar.

hmm well I don't know if you all know how big the tension rod bushings are from the front suspension of a 240sx... they're pretty big but suposedly people have been able to replace them in a hand vice... that's probably the largest bushing I can think of in the 240...

is it the size of the press that isn't enough or is it the amount of force? there are some 3 ton presses in the screw type... I think its just a larger arm on the lever.

it's not the size, it's the bushing design. the front control arms on all the FWD cars use the same bushing.. it's a small inner sleeve with a bit of rubber around it, then an outer sleeve that's pressed into the control arm. to get them out, you have to burn the rubber until the stuff melts and the inner sleeve pops out. then you cut the outer sleeve and hammer it out.

to get the new bushing in, you torch the control arm and freeze the bushing, then start pressing and hope it goes in on the first try. total PITA. I've collapsed three or four control arms trying to press that bushing in... they strain my 12 ton press.

the front tension rod bushings on the 240 look similar, but I'm not sure if they have that outer ring on them like the others do. I'll take a look on my S14 tomorrow. (need to replace mine as well, but I think I'm going to cheap out and jut cut it off and install a heim joint on it. )

I would have just gone with solid pillowball style rods but... I want to keep this car comfortable. The bushing does have a metal jacket surrounding it.

My entire rear suspension is heim joints.. I notice no degradation in ride quality. I wouldn't worry about the tension rod bushings.

Really? Hmm... well I'll put the ES bushing in for the tension rods and if anything else needs to be replaced i"ll see if I can find some cheap heim joint replacements.

don't go with cheap heim joints tho... that's where the quality really matters. last thing you want is a cheap joint that needs lubed every two weeks and rattles like the suspension is about to fall off.
good ones are about twice the price of cheap ones, but have teflon impregnated plastic injected into the joint so they should (in theory) never wear out or need lubrication.
I've replaced all the ones in my suspension with them and it's a night and day difference in road noise.
