Tie-rod tool

I've been running around like a chicken with its head chopped off. Ok here's the deal:

My fiancee needs to have the tie-rods removed from her pontiac. I've been to three different shops and they've all given me something different. So today I went to Advanced Auto and asked them what would be needed to remove the tie-rods and they gave me this:

Is this the right toolset or do I have to make yet another trip?

Secondly, does anyone have any 'how-tos' on removing and installing them. Since we have a 7 week old now, I refuse to drive that car until its safe and we currently don't have the funds to take it to a shop.

Thanks a bunch guys.

assuming the pontiac tie rods are like the nissans, then yes that's what you need.

usually I just use a blowtorch and hammer though.

i JUST took mine off of my Altima, like 30 min ago
i used a pipe wrench (aka monkey wrench) and it works great because it tightens as you push/pull the handle.
but i had the wrong tie rod! i pulled one off a wrecked 96 model, mine is a 97,
although they are the same U13 chassis, nissan changed the threadson the bal joint that year to the new threads that would be used all the way up to the 01 model

It depends. If you are removing the OUTER tie rod ends then yes you have the correct tool. If you have to do the INNER tie rods then no.

The outers are a piece of cake, just count the number of threads to get it close and then go get an alignment afterwards.

I haven't had time to work out it yet because its so friggin cold. From what my father-in-law says, it is pretty much the same procedure, but him and everyone else keeps saying that the tool-set I have shown in my previous statement won't work. Sounds to me like they are using a ghetto-method.

And yes its just the outers

There is more than one tool that will work when you change out the outer tie rod ends. I use a small pickle fork when seperating mine. I also have a small puller very similar to one pictured in that case that has worked for me too. It just depends if that puller in your case will fit over the tie rod end. I think it will. I only paid $15 for the small size pickle fork, its the easiest way to get the job done, especially if your changing out the end anyways. The pullers are safer because they do not tear the boot, you just have to be sure that the puller will "fit".

I used a pickle fork to take off the ball joints on the control arms and outer tie rods.
