Titan vs Tundra

im ready to buy a 1/2 ton pickup. ive narrowed my choices to either nissan or toyota.

toyota got CR best buy in july. downsides to it: 6700 towing capacity, no side airbags. reliability is expected to be excellent.

nissan is getting positive press. CR however ranked it below even the F-150. their complaints, noisy engine, poor visibility, lowest payload in group. safety of the 1/2 ton class seems very good. i would expect reliability to be pretty good.

anyone have suggestions?

What do you need? A towing monster or just a pickup?
If you are doing light stuff like pulling a boat or something, I would acually reccomend the Tundra, but if you need real power, get the Titan.

Also, I would sugest waiting if you can. Toyota is redesigning the Tundra for 2006 to make it competetive with the big boys. The 05 got a power boost, but it's still not near the Titan.

the only way is to drive it and decide for yourself... the wusses at CR say noisy engine, but if you go drive one you'll see it just has a nice throaty exhaust that you can hear all the time (although on the highway I could barely hear it once the engine was in 5th gear). My main problem with tundras is everyone i've seen loaded looks like it's about to collapse. The Tundra double Cab is nice and roomy but still not as much as the Titan and the Titan is downright fast. If you are comparing ext cabs than the Titan should win hands down. IMHO I've always thought the tundra looks like a 97-03 f-150 inside and out. The materials maybe better in The Toyota but the dash design looks like they traced over a Ford's. The Titan however brakes the mold. Just wait till the 05 for either model cuz like it was said the Tundra v8 gets a 40hp power boost and the Titan should have all it's bugs worked out after Nissan sent that team of engineers to evaluate some designs when they failed miserably in J.D. Powers Initial Quality survey.

later,

I confused?? The Titan rated low in Cargo???
The Titan is the highest of ALL 1/2 Tons and equals that of most ALL standard 3/4 tons! Along with the Titan is ONLY running 30HP less than the ALL MIGHTY touted HEMI. AND has MORE TORQUE.. Torque as you may know, is what wins pulling, racing and just flat rollin up the hill!
The Reason CR put the F-150 in front of the TITAN is ONLY due to the " Choices that can be aquired in creature comfort and model lineup ".
You want a real truck!? Go TITAN. You want something that will do the dog and move the kids out and get groceries from COSTCO and be like the nieghbors? Go Toyota, Ford, Dodge or Chevy. The domestics will give you a car ride and fancy commercials to watch. Toyota will give you dependability in engine and weak suspension after awhile. NISSAN will give you a pulling work horse with room for a growing family and looks that take a bit to get used to. Yet, the Domestic boys will lust over it out of the corner of thier eyes.

good advice to wait until 2005. i can deal with waiting. currently driving a 95 F-350 2 wheel drive. bad news is it gets around 8 MPG. good news is its totally paid for, insurance is low, etc. so i will cope with it until the titan gets a few things cleaned up in 2005.

i have to say, reliability is pretty important to me. that and safety. ya, i probably should get a minivan but we need a truck so there you go. toyota obviously has reliability nailed, but the wimpy engine really sux. when we do need the power, we really need it. we have a 3000# trailer, that we load with either 1, 2 or 3 horses, plus tack. i easily get close to 7000#, and i dont really want to be at 100% rated capacity.

when can we expect to see the 2005 titans rolling into the dealer?

hey how you doing..i heard that nissan had the best engine in that titan..i gotta say the titan looks nicer than the tundra...go for the NISSAN..titan is still a top competitor for pick up and i think its better than the tundra..

yeah for towing you can't beat the titan... as far as reliabilty is concerned I have no doubt in my mind that the Titan will run just as reliable as the frontier/hardbody or the pathfinders. The Titan's main drawback right now is being a first year vehicle w/ some bugs. I honestly think though that the bugs were limited to the first models since people I have talked to that have bought them lately have no complaints whatsoever. The 2005's should be rolling off the line by next month I believe but you can get a 2004 with a 1500 rebate and easily at invoice price. I think the only addition for 05 to the titan is a power rear cab window (not sure if it is going to be full roll down like the tundra or just a power version sliding window like the new f-150).

i found this link: dont know how accurate it is:

http://trucks.about.com/od/2005picku.../titan_new.htm

New on 2005 Titan Trucks

* Crew Cab models have a standard power rear window with defroster
* Dampened tailgate assist on all Titan models
* Standard active head restraints for front driver and front passenger
* Brushed aluminum interior trim on LE models
* Spray-in bedliner available as stand-alone option on XE
* Leather bench seat available on LE
* New wheel finish for SE models
* New front door badging V8 TITAN
* New exterior color: Red Alert (replaces Sedona)
* New interior color: Steel (replaces Sand/Steel)

all this seems pretty much cosmetic. i wonder what one full model year of producing trucks does for the overall reliability?

can anyone tell me what the normal warranty is on these trucks? is it 3/36k?

I have heard of nothing big that would stop me from buying an 04 TITAN.
I bought my 03 Frontier when I heard sqaubble about pwr and reliability. I have only had a fusable link blow and the A/C switch replaced ( Tech bulliten)
As for anything ELSE. It runs out great, pulls 4200lbs nicely and gets my family around safely.

The Titan will make YOU happy, whether it be the 04 at Drop Dead Prices and 0% interest (HINT) or the 05 at $2000 off.
As for NISSAN vs. TOYOTA in reliability!? 2 things:
1) who has the best engine for over the past 10yrs
2) Look at the home turf of these 2 mfg's and see WHOM is #1..
In Asia / Japan NISSAN is #1, TOYOTA #2 and HONDA #3. Only in America do they believe the HYPE of commercials.
Toyota and Nissan are the lowest in Call Backs and maintainance per miles OVERALL.
It is a Tough Decision. And as I am an OLD Domestics lover, DODGE, It is not easy making a decision to run with anything else. I too hauled a 5th Dbl Axle 28' 3 horse slant with slpr behind my D250 TD 4x4. And my NISSAN to the tracks also. And if I was still doing the same interests today, I would grab the NISSAN OR another DODGE TD.
Just a view from this Point.
