Question Brake Dust

My brakes on the New Titan were vibrating and they told me that they had defective brake pads. I got them replaced but they are still terrible with brake dust. Anyone got a solution for the brake dust? do you know of any ceramics that are available?

No solution for brake dust other than replacing the pads with either a ceramic, a semi-metallic, or just a low dust pad. PBR makes great pads that I've used with success on my Volvo - twice the life, next to no dust.

Even with how new the truck is, your best bet is to hit the local parts store and ask them what's available. A good parts guy should be able to point you toward a low dust pad.

In regards to semi-metallic and ceramic, just be careful you aren't setting yourself up for trouble. Pads need to match the rotors in order to properly dissipate the heat. I've had friends who have gone to a hi-tech ceramic or semi-metallic pad without upgrading their stock rotors. The result is very quick warping of the rotors.

Post what you find in terms of brake pads.

Brake dust is good! For the most part, here's the spectrum:

Shorter Stopping Distance <-------------------------> Longer Stopping Distance
Soft Pad Material <-------------------------> Hard Pad Material
Dusty <-------------------------> No Dust
Stops well in Cold Weather<-------------------------> Good Luck
Quiet<-------------------------> Noisy

Keep in mind that your Titan is a new model, so they're going to use a good stopping pad for test articles, etc. Nissan will bow to consumer pressure and make lower performance, less dusty pads as time goes on. Same thing happened with the Q45 in 1990. OEM Pads, brakes, and tires were all designed for optimum performance. US consumers went nuts when they all needed to be replaced at 15K.

I blame the anti-asbestos crowd. Sweet, sweet asbestos. Tons of wear. No dust. Lots of stopping power. Oh yeah and some carcinogenic dust....

Now we're left with a multitude of choices. The purists will always go with the matched OEM pad, rotor, combos. But just remember, the manufacturer has an agenda too. Stopping power versus wear versus noise versus dust. Nothing says you can't reprioritize how your brakes are set up and opt for more noise and less dust, while maintaining the stopping power. Just shop wisely.
