Free VIN Etching in Dallas
Free VIN etching offered
01:25 PM CDT on Wednesday, June 30, 2004
From Staff Reports
Noting that more cars are stolen in July than any other month, the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department will offer free VIN etching on Thursday.
VIN Etching permanently etches a vehicle's identification number on
all windows of the vehicle, making the most commonly stolen parts traceable by law enforcement.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Don Peritz said complete doors are commonly stolen and resold on the black market.
“If the VIN number’s on those windows, you can’t sell it,” he said.
According to the Texas Automobile Theft Prevention Authority, July was the most popular month for auto theft in 2002. More than 9,000 vehicles were stolen that month; nearly 103,000 vehicles were taken that year.
The Sheriff’s Department will offer the etching from 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the southwest corner of the Dallas County Health and Human Services Building, 2377 Stemmons Freeway. Etching will be suspended if it rains because the acid is diluted by water, Peritz said, adding that the service would resume when the weather cleared.
Other locations and dates for etchings will be announced later in the month.
