Angry Friggen' rock and getting lucky....

I am so pissed!!! Yesterday on the way home from work I am cruising up 2222 behind a big 4x4 newer Chevy pickup when the truck clipped a huge friggen rock that was laying in the road. I say huge because this damn thing was bigger than a softball, and the truck shot the rock straight back at my car!! This is the lucky part because the truck could have easily kicked up the rock into the air and onto my hood or threw my windshield. Now, of all of the places this damn rock could have went, it just had to come flying back in one of the crappiest spots!! The damn thing came flying back straight into the top of my exhaust and ROLLED down my exhaust to my cat, bounced and rolled down the back of the car / exhaust a little more, and then finally clipped the passenger side of the exhaust pipe between the "Y" and the muffler and went flying into the air like a bouncing ball. I caught the rock flying high (I couldn't see just how high cause I lost sight) into the air out of my rear view mirror. I don't think it hit anyone else cause I did not hear anything after that, but there were cars around me and some were fairly close. When I got home I jacked the car up and took a look. I can officially say that the new exhaust parts are 100 times better quality than what Nissan uses!! The only thing that happen to any of the new exhaust piping were small nicks where the rock hit the pipe. Too bad it did not punch a hole in my cat!! It came close though! Do I need to worry about the torn mesh that you can see in a couple of the close up pics??

Jason, I'm glad that rock didn't do any body damage to your car!
Undercarriage is a lot more bearable.

Anyways, here's your excuse to tell wifey you need the racepipe!
Here's why: The tear in that mesh will only get worse with age
and might cause exhast gas leakage. That section is called the
"flex pipe" and acts as a collector of exhaust gases. As the gases
heat up and cool down that section of the pipe will expand and contract accordingly. With a tear like that, the gases will not be
properly disbursed downstream. I'd get it replaced immediately preferably with a Stillen racepipe like mine!

That piping down there is super cheap. The rock dented it or flatened it like it was nothing. The race pipe came to mind as soon as I saw what the rock did. Just might have to do it now!!

That is pure craziness... I didn't realize the Nissan piping would crush so easily.

Of course, I'm also interested in the simple fact that I did not realize that the Alty stock y-pipe was tuned (or partially at least). VERY interesting....
