Question Used springs - how long before going soft?

I finally have tracked down some SER springs that, from the pictures, look to be in good condition - the only problem is that they have been sitting out of the car since 97.

Somewhere, and I'll be damned if I can't find it again, I thought I read a post/thread where it was said that if you leave the springs out, they'll lose their stiffness/tension. I'm wondering if that was just my feverish memory, or is that indeed true? Would springs left in a box for 8 years still be decent?

Regards,
Michael

Springs shouldn't lose rate over time unless the physical properties of the metal change (like if half the spring has turned from steel into rust). They will lose free length if they're kept loaded over long periods of time, but that shouldn't be too much of a concern if they've just been in a box for the past 8 years.

Thanks Reverm. I've come to respect your knowledge quite a bit.

These springs look pretty damn good - the gent claims he took them off his 93 Sentra in favor of aftermarket mods back in 97. I've seen the pics and they look pretty good, a spot of rust on one but some steel wool/elbow grease will remove that. They have roughly 80k miles on them before he removed them, but from what I've read in the other posts, that shouldn't be a problem unless the springs were starting to sag - he claims they weren't.

$10/spring - so unless the shipping is horrid, sounds like I've got my stiffer springs. With the SER swaybars going in, I should have a good upgrade on the car going.

Regards,
Michael
