struts

I have a B13 with 85000 miles. I live in NYC and the suspension does not like the terrible roads here. I am thinking of replacing the struts with AGX's or GR-2's.

Do I need to replace the stock springs at the same time? One mechanic told me to replace them together because doing struts w/out springs will wear the struts out in 6 months.

How can you tell if springs need replacement? Do they wear out or just rust out? My car is totally stock and I don't plan on autocrossing.

Springs generally don't ever need replacement, but struts do. Perhaps you have the two mixed up?

Installing aftermarket (shorter, stiffer) springs without upgrading the struts will cause the struts to wear out faster.

If you just want to handle nasty roads, don't bother changing the springs. Buy some KYB GR2's and call it a day. A good strut that will work very well, and you won't sacrifice the limited suspension travel of the B13.

Struts generally last about 10 years, so you're probably due for them.

Good luck!
