Question for morepower2....please

Hey Mike, I finally met you in phoenix last march at the convention! I loved the 'all you can drink' bar they had at the hotel! lol!!

I read somewhere (SCC magazine?) that you installed the N1 close ratio tranny in your 'disco potato' , is this true?

If it is true can you tell me some first hand knowledge about it? Like when you shift at 7500+ rpms, does it drop down to 4700 rpms or so like the de tranny, or does it drop to only 5000 rpms between gear shifts instead? Would this be a good roadrace/track day tranny? It seems if its closer ratio, you'll stay in peak h.p./torque more often, plus my tranny may need to be replaced in my 96 SE-R since it has 130,000+ miles on it.

I apologize that this isn't a brake/suspension question, but it is still racing related

Thanks in advance,
-Bryan

I can answer this one. It is basic math. N1 shifting at 7500rpm will go like this.
1st to 2nd=7500rpm-4388rpm
2nd to 3rd=7500rpm-5127rpm
3rd to 4th=7500rpm-5498
4th and 5th would be the same as the regular transmission. Only difference is that all the MPH will be at lower speeds due to the lower final drive as well.
For reference this is how the DE transmission ratios look
1 st to 2nd=7500rpm-4471rpm
2nd to 3rd=7500rpm-5282rpm
3rd to 4th=7500rpm-5686rpm

As you can see the N1 actually has wider spacing in the 1st thru 3rd gears. It does have a lower final drive so it will pull harder in all the gears. Enjoy.

Edit: These calculations do not take into effect that the car keeps moving forward a bit when you shift (especially in first gear) and that clutch slip during shifting actually gets the rpm a bit higher then what the calculations indicate.
