the US spec sr20 is perfectly legal, the sr20det is not, and the rb is not either...if u get pulled over, it depends on the cop as to what is the fate of the vehicle

It depends on where you live, what the local laws are concerning engine swaps. California has some of the strictest emissions and legal restrictions, requiring the engine to be the same year or newer and for the most part, outlawing JDM engines (like both SR and RB setups). I'm sure there are options available to you in those locations however, the best place to find out is your local emissions shop as the're the ones who are going to pass or fail you. I know with Honda's, you have to take your car to a Ref station and let them look it over and make sure everything was safe and all the emission equipment was in place and functioning (you sometimes need papers proving the engine wasn't stolen and things of that nature). If you passed, they'd give you a sticker saying the motor was legal and then you had to pass the standard visual and sniffer tests at an emissions station. From what I understand, it also somewhat depends on who you know as much as your car being safe.

Where I live in PA, they don't even do emissions testing (at least not yet, they'll probably start soon though). When my cars need inspected, I just give the guy $12 and he puts the sticker on, doesn't even bother to look at the car. It's dangerous because no one's checking my brakes or suspension but I spend enough time under my car, I know when there is a problem. I talked to the guy I bought my car from in NY and he said if the cops pull you over without a cat, it's a $2,000 fine but I don't think they crush the car (for $2k, they might as well crush your wallet). If your caught doing some stupid and dangerous (like street racing or going over 100 mph), they might impound the car and throw the book at you for anything they can, like an engine swap, but for the most part they probably won't hassle you.

There is no US spec sr20 for the 240SX. It was only offered with the KA24.
