I finally got this SR20DET engine running. As painful as it is to admit, the problem was bad gas. I didn't think gasoline that was 5 maybe 6 months old would go bad but, according to a friend who sells gasoline additives, the gas we are getting at the pumps today is crap. So, thanks to all who posted here offering sugestions on what my problem was. Now I have to get a muffler for it so I can tune it up and get it running right.
you should try putting that engine into a car no, just kidding. i remember you saying that you wanted to get it running before you put it in your MGB. it just looks funny on the floor knowing that it runs.
Yeah, it runs. With the muffler on I was able to rev it up some. This engine really has some nuts. The boost gauge went up to maybe 2, no more than 3 PSI and this thing was obviously pushing some serious horse power. Yeah, I do have to get this thing into a car. I spent some time this morning eliminating some wires from the harness that I don't need for things like air conditioning and automatic transmission but, I am having trouble timing it. From what I understand I should be at 15 degrees BTDC. When I turn the CAS with a timing light on the pully, I can't turn it far enough to get it where it should be unless I remove the bolt that holds the CAS to the block and that ain't right. I pulled the vavle cover off (for the 97th time) and turned the CAS one tooth but then I still couldn't get the pointer to the correct mark.
Congrats! Bad fuel eh? wow, would never had guessed!
There are a few FAQ's around on how to set the base timing with the SR. The important thing is to set the base timing then any other timing changes should be done by remapping the timing maps in the ecu, not by what is commonly referred to as 'CAS Bashing' (moving the CAS around manually)

CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!!
Remember to unplug the TPS when setting timing.

You do move the CAS to set the base timing.
