SR20 DET problems? info pls

Hey im new to all this car stuff. I'd just like to know how reliable these engines are and what usually goes wrong with them as im about to buy myself a 180sx and im looking at two different options. An 89 180sx with a 1.8ltr engine and a 94 model with the SR20 DET in it. Any info would be much appreciated cheers As i don't want to be forking out craploads of money

I would go with the 94 with the DET. First, the DET has alot more power. But it depends on what you're looking for, Value or power?

Like Driftmaster said, depends on your intentions and needs. I think the SR20 is a better engine. off the bat u got more power and it has an almost unlimited capacity for upgrades and big horses.
The 94 model.... what model type?

the 89 has the CA18DET. it may have less power but it revs higher. it also has an iron block and can make just as much, or more, power than the SR20DET. it also has a lot more technology than the SR. the SR is overrated in my opinion.

Err so let me get this straight the CA18DET had an iron block which means its old like what all the ancient motors were made of?... and ths SR20DET has a alloy block and is what all new engines have correct?

If all of the above is true then how the hell is a CA more expensive than an SR?? Because if im correct down here in Australia i had a look in the mag i bought and the S13 CA18DET RWD starts at $1400 and the s13 SR20DET RWD starts from $2800.

But any my mother seems to think that $12,000 is way to much for an 89 model (which is a 15 yr old car) with an iron plated motor.... and thinks i should go for the 94 model. I'll post the details of both cars so maybe some of u can help me out and see if it is a rip off to get the 89 for that much.

1989 Nissan 180sx Kms 135,000 2 door coupe 5 speed manual

4 cylinder petrol turbo 1.8ltr (1809cc) Alloy wheels Auto climate control

Bodykit Cd player Electric mirrors Power steering/windows Fuel Injection

Sunroof Tinted windows Upgraded S15 T28 turbo Boost controller

Boost and Oil tachos with some flashy lights or some crap like that heh.

not sure but do they all come with 4wheel disk brakes and alarms? central locking etc?.

ill find out if he left some stuff out.

It costs less. Older, smaller capacity, less power, no demand.

A car will cost more if it has other things on it like a kit, bigger turbo and engine hardware etc.
