Hey everyone I am new here.
I am looking to buy a s14 sr20det and tranny.I don`t know a lot about these motors so maybe you can help me out with some of my questions.
1.What is the diffrence between red and black top motors and which is better? Do they apply to the s14 sr20det?
2. When I buy the motor should I rebuild it befor I install it?
3.How much hp,psi can a stock motor handle before you have to build up the motor?
4.How much power can the stock tranny and rear handle?
5.My goal it to have 450-500 rwhp with good spool up time. Does anyone have hp like this or maybe a guide line I can go buy?
Do you think I can get this kinda power with $10,000?
Thanks for your time and answers.
Buy the way I sold my 2000 Prelude to get a 98 240sx. I have to say the mildly mod. prelude was alot faster then the stock 240 but the honda kitty toy could never put out the kinda power I will get with this car.
not to mention FWD sucks compared to RWD. Do some searching on freshalloy.com(forums area), and search on google for some SR swap places. I think heavy throttle, mckinny motorsports, etc. They have lots of info. A lot of the SE-R guys have had probs with the bearings on their DET swaps, so it's recommended to change out the bearings while the motor is still out (a lot easier that way). It's good preventative maintaince to avoid a spun bearing. Somewhere around 400+ whp, 22+psi, I think you need a new head gasket. Wish I had a 240!
The red/black top option is only on the S13 motors. red was the earlier ones and balck the later ones, but they are essentially the same: i.e. you can throw a red valve cover on a blacktop and now you have a redtop. S14 and after all had black tops, and they are a little different motors.
I dont think you will get 450-500Hp and have good spool up characteristics. Big Hp=big boost levels=turbo lag.
Try using a T3/T4 hybrid turbo with A/R numbers around .4 to .6.
That should put you up in the 300-350 Hp range at around 15-20psi of boost with an aftermarket headgasket.
After 20psi you may want to build the internals like forged pistons and rods, but I am not sure what kind of max boost it can take and still be reliable on the stock bottom end.
The stock turbo is only good up to about 12psi, after that you are out of its efficiency range and you risk burning it up.
These kind of major changes require changes to the fuel system, including some sort of fuel management system and probably bigger injectors.
Keep in mind it is going to be expensive and probably require a custom exhaust manifold and large intercooler among a bunch of other stuff.
good luck
What AEM_Inc just posted is all good! but why build somin if u don't have to!
Honestly ... if u are after HP don't even bother with the SR. u might want to look at the RB swap.
For about 3500 (maybe less) u can get a RB25det front clip.
Now u have 6500 left to play with ... HKS Manifold & HKS 3037 run u about 2500 .... u have 4 grand left enuff to buy you intercooler kit ... custom 3" exhaust (turbo --> back) upgrade injectors, ecu and all the little stuff that goes along with it. That should be in the ball park of 10 grand!
With this setup u'll be in the 11-12's without a doubt!
I know a shop in michigan that has a rb25det front clip and a rb26dett in stock sitting in thier warehouse. They also have 3 s13 red tops and 3 s13 blacktop front clips there also sitting on the racks. www.autowerksmotorsport.com email then see what they can do for you.
sorry to jump in but I am thinking about selling my 93 Probe GT and getting a 240. I am currently running 9psi(279.4hp,280ft/lbs) through my Gt and was wondering what engine I would want to put in the 240? I like the way the 240 looks and the RWD. If somebody could put up a list of places to buy JDM engines and parts that would be great. Thank you.
give us a call or email. we have lots of "know how" with the sr20det and the 240sx. i also like to think we have some great prices!
shaun
91 240sx sr20det (je pistons, eagle rods)
92 240sx sr20det (arias, crower)
10 grand you can do alot... 500hp might be pushing it a lil..
Get the S14 front clip for 3000$, get it swapped for 1500$ unless you want to do it on your own.
mechanics of the swap isnt that hard if you have the knowledge/equipment/tools. wiring needs to be done
1.go to a shop for 500$
2.get a prewired harness to plug/play 200$
3.get a s13/s14 service manual and trace back every single wire back one at a time. they may not work, trial and error is a huge pain in the ass
if you have the money right then and there,i would recommend building up the engine before the swap. the installation costs are also cheaper and it is just easier to do. gaskets, valves, valve springs, valve pivots, and rocker arm stopper is a must and build the bottom end as well if you have the money. pistons, rods, crankshaft.. want more power?? get a Jun or Toda 2.2liter stroker kit
HKS 3037 turbo charger has a 470ps output. that's pretty close to your 500hp. with some tuning, you could have 450+hp 240sx easy.
do not ask for guidelines because they do not always play out. a lot of things depend on one another.
You also gotta think about clutch, cooling, other turbo parts, ecu/engine/fuel/boost management, suspension, lsd, rims/ties, brakes, and such. 10grand may sound a lot but when you're going for 500hp, you may need a little more. in my opinion, 10 grand is enough to have a 400-450hp 240sx that kicks ass
with 10 grand i can build a super KA and rape all u suckas
but down to business with 10k why not go RB26DETT you got the cash... use it

Is it me or the prices on heavythrottle are more then u guys speculate.
They maybe pricey but dont you want the work to be done by someone who knows?
They estimate 6grand with everything included to have the car running + many aftermarket parts like clutch, IC ect. check it out.
and where can i read on the bearing failures.. any more info would be greatly appriciated.
i like heavythrottle
they guarentee that ur sr will run when shipped
they are well known have no bad feedback
their prices are high because they are a business and the SR20DET it a hot item these days

Gotta be careful when you swap an SR tho...remember that the driveshaft and differential still have the mileage of the KA, make sure you replace those.

Thats pretty much undrivable for street. 300-350 is a better figure to aim for. Whats the point of having 450 hp when all you do is wheelspin everywhere?

I agree.
I was just answering his question. There is no turbo kit with the spooling characteristics that he said he wanted, with the desired amount of HP that he wanted.
300 wheel HP is all Ill be aiming for with my 240, but right now Im having problems even getting my Z rims to fit, so thats a long way off.

Yeah, just making a point
300 is a good achievable target. Two mates of mine just hit the 300, one has an s15 with awesome HKS gear and the other is a 94 180sx with custom and aussie gear (garrett GT30 turbo, ext wastegate, custom high mount manifold, 550cc injectors, autronic management). Looks awesome!
Will have a full write up on the second one on our website in the next few weeks. Should be informative as he did it on a sensible budget.
