A place called START (serious track and road technology) in Adelaide south Australia....

We build rally cars, Serious 7's and restore old alfas (evil cars those!).....oh and the odd hybrid repowering job (like CA18DET's in Gemi's, and building "Nizmodores")

nobody ever heard of the SR20VET?
world's first factory turbocharged engine with variable valve lift and timing (VVL) system. I know they are not exactly commonplace but in my opinion it's the best 4 banger ever made. 280 factory horsepower without breaking a sweat.

also the subie EJ's are awesome

the 4G63's is a piece, say goodbye to your weekends if you own one of these

of course we have heard of the SR20VET. just because it is relatively new and rare in the states doesn't mean we have never heard of it.

yeah i was just kidding, i was just suprised nobody had mentioned it thats all.

i mean they are rare and expensive as hell but if I got to pick any 4 cylinder I wouldn't even think twice about the VET

Show me a stock SR20DET that has 150K+ mileage on it, sees 28+ psi ritually, puts 430+ down to the wheels, and then we'll talk.

As much as the SR20DET has interested me (currently building one up), as far as durability and "bang for the buck", I'll stick with the 4G63 anyday.

Play with both before you start downplaying one against another.

I own a high-powered N/A JDM 4G63 in my 93 Elantra and I'll tell you what, I've put the smack down on a few of my friends with SR20DE powered cars. Though I'm a CA18 enthusiast, I would concur with DSSA to say that the 4G63 is more reliable and a better user-friendly foundation to start with. The SR is poorly designed for stout/stock balls-out high performance. Rocker arms stoppers, sleeves, timing chain and that alloy block makes it to be very unforgiving if you lean it out or over rev it; and very expensive to upgrade using sleeves of course. Right out the box, both the SR and the 4G are pretty powerful in their own right, but moving up the horsepower scale, I trust the 4G63 more than I would trust the SR and this from my own experience of wrenching on both motors. Break the 4g63's timing belt and you may as well start look for a new engine. Skip a tooth on the SR's timing chain and you are deep shit as well. Welcome to the world of performance engine whereas all of the engines including my beloved CA18DETs are riding on a fine line of destruction. Cast iron blocks win this debate and once again, the 4G63 is no slouch!

4G63s are powerful... seems like they're neck in neck with the SR20DET in terms of maximum power production... can't comment on durability, but the ones I've seen around are pretty damn sturdy.

Unfortunately, due to a lack of a good knowledge base on the SR20s in my country, a lot of people are blowing them up...

Best NAs...
Agreed, Toyota 4AGE 20V Blacktops are fucking awesome... (know a guy with the Yamaha top 4AGTE...) but I think the B18C takes it for power to weight...not many engines rev so well... I'm not a honda lover per se... but these Type R engines are pretty hard to beat, even by the new VEs...

Unfortunately, in tuning and swappage, SR20VEs don't show on our radar yet... not enough of them around, sadly... we're still trying to get a full set here... (before anyone says I CAN GET THEM... we're cheap mo'fo's... _

Wow...

The 4g63 is undeniably a very reliable motor... The problem is that most of them have high milage, and most people bought them used.... WELL USED. Properly built it will duke it out with anything you can throw at it...

THe sr20vet is cool, but good luck getting one.

I'll take my 4g63 any day.

Once I get my talon re-assembled (taken apart at 108,000 miles for rods, pistons, and bigger turbo... it was still running like a champ.) With a 50trim t3/t4 I'm expecting near 400hp at all four wheels.... Find me a silvia that will beat an awd launch....

I would love to give him a chance to back it up! My N/A 4G63 Elantra against his SR20 powered sentra SE. Though I am a die-hard nissan fan, pound for pound the SE gets smoked. And as far as weekends go, my elantra is the work-horse whereas my CA18DET powered sentras just sit (Until duty calls).

I love my 4G63T when it runs...too bad I have to make up for all the neglect that the previous owner put into it. That's okay, I dropped a 6-bolt into my 96 and it should run pretty smooth.
