S15 tranny?

hi. i was wanting some info on the 6spd tranny for the s15. i'm thinking of buying a 240 and doing the s15 conversion. yes, i'm a newbie at the 240/silvia but i'm learning. i have a few questions and was wondering if anyone could help me out or point me in the right direction. anyone know the top speed of the tranny? does it compare to the supra's? because after too long i'd like to be competing with them. anyone know if it's possible to get that monitor that comes out of the top of the dash? i like that feature and which would be better to do the s15 sr20det engine or the skyline engine?

Skyline motor(either one) obviously! Hard to beat the extra displacement. Expect to pay a hell of alot more for the motor and the install. It's not nearly as easy of an install as the SR.

Dunno about the top speed of the tranny, but i hear a lot of guys in japan swap out the s15 tranny for the s14 because it's stronger. And personally, top speed runs are stupid because the Supras are hitting over 180 mph; and going that fast on a public road is just stupid. A closure rate of over 100mph doesn't give you much time to slow down.

Swapping the S15 tranny means you have to get the rear diff as well. The speed sensor in the S15 is in the rear diff.

They're supposed to be able to hold only up to about 400hp then things start breaking.

Other than that, it's a pretty noisy box considering they crammed the extra gear in the same space as a 5-speed, which is also why it's a bit weaker.

I would personally stick with the SR20DET conversion. Engines such as the RB25DET and the RB26DETT can fit, but it definitely won't be a bolt on affair (I'm not sure about the earlier engines eg. RB20). Since you are from the US, those engines will cost you an arm and a leg. In addition, I doubt there will be many people with the experience of doing those conversions! But be warned, a S15 SR20DET and tranny is not cheap either! I'm not sure how much they are in the US, but in Australia there are still very expensive even though we have the S15 here!

I would personally do the SR20DET conversion. See if you can get the engine from a late model S14 and keep the standard transmission. Spend the rest of your money on doing up the engine.
