tryin to decide if I can afford to drive a 240 with a sr20. What kind of gas does the sr20det take?

get the highest octane thats provided in your area, and at a decent gas station like shell or exxon. i wouldn't run anything lower than 91.

what kind of gas mileage should I expect from the sr20

it all depends how you drive. if you try to stay out of boost and shift at low RPM's, i'm sure you can get over 20mpg. it hard to do that with a small turbo though, since it doesn't take much to make it spool.
